Fullstack Software Engineer

CollectiveSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

Collective is seeking a Software Engineer to contribute to the development and scaling of their accounting product systems. This role involves working across the full stack to manage the connection between member bank activity, bookkeeping, and tax outcomes. The engineer will automate reconciliation, process transaction data from banking and accounting partners, and transform financial activity into usable financial records. This is a product engineering position with significant ownership, requiring collaboration with Product, Design, Operations, and the in-house accounting team. The role emphasizes shipping quickly, iterating based on feedback, and leveraging modern AI tools and agent-based workflows to enhance development, code quality, and product capabilities. It is ideal for engineers eager for broader ownership, focused on outcomes, and who view AI as integral to software development.

Requirements

  • 3–4 years of experience building and shipping production software in a product-focused environment.
  • Solid fullstack engineering skills (e.g., Python, Django, React, or similar modern frameworks).
  • Experience integrating with third-party APIs and working with real-world data.
  • Hands-on experience using AI developer tools (copilots, code agents) in daily workflows.
  • Ability to take a well-scoped problem and drive it to a shipped, instrumented solution with light guidance.
  • Good product and UX instincts to make sensible scope tradeoffs and ask clarifying questions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, particularly when explaining technical tradeoffs to non-engineering partners.
  • Familiarity with SQL and working with data warehouses (BigQuery is a plus).
  • Interest in the accounting/fintech/payroll domain, or a proven ability to quickly learn new domains.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship features for the accounting product, including member-facing reconciliation and bookkeeping experiences, as well as internal tooling for accounting and bookkeeping operators.
  • Work on the integration layer between Collective and its partners, including extending APIs, handling edge cases, and improving data reliability.
  • Enhance the transaction pipeline from bank feeds through the accounting platform to the data layer, focusing on reliability, observability, and drift detection.
  • Own well-scoped features end-to-end, from definition and building to deployment, instrumentation, and iteration, with support from senior engineers.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and Operations to translate accounting workflows into software and identify engineering tradeoffs early.
  • Utilize AI-powered development tools (copilots, code agents, agent workflows) daily to increase speed and reduce manual overhead.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical partners.
  • Integrate AI agents and automation into development workflows and product features.
