Staff Software Engineer, Full-stack

Onebrief
$180,000 - $230,000Remote

About The Position

Onebrief builds collaboration and AI-powered workflow software for military planning and operational coordination. We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer to tackle complex technical and organizational challenges. The role involves defining technical direction, building foundational elements for squads, and ensuring coherence across teams. The platform spans a modern full stack including React/TypeScript frontend, Node.js backend services, cloud-native infrastructure, and authentication/identity systems. The ideal candidate is energized by ambiguity, identifies high-leverage work, has strong technical opinions, and cares about the growth of other engineers.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of technical ownership that spans teams, not just projects
  • Demonstrated ability to set architectural direction at the org or platform level
  • Fluency across the full stack, with the depth to go from frontend architecture to infrastructure trade-offs
  • Experience building in a squad or rotation-based model, or the clear instincts of someone who would thrive in one
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, API design, data modeling, and cloud-native infrastructure at scale
  • Active and sophisticated use of AI coding tools, with a point of view on how they should be used well
  • Exceptional communication: ability to write RFCs that get alignment, give feedback that lands, and make complex trade-offs legible to non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfort in ambiguity: make progress without waiting for full clarity, and bring others along

Nice To Haves

  • Background in mission-critical or high-compliance domains (FedRAMP, SOC2, DoD)
  • Experience with authentication and identity infrastructure at scale (OIDC, SAML, federated identity)
  • Prior experience in a high-growth B2B SaaS environment scaling through significant inflection points
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and the trade-offs of async-first system design

Responsibilities

  • Define and drive cross-squad technical strategy, identifying systemic gaps, proposing architectural direction, and seeing complex initiatives through from framing to delivery.
  • Shape the conditions for squads to succeed by establishing durable abstractions, shared patterns, and platform primitives.
  • Operate in the highest-ambiguity spaces, bringing clarity and making problems tractable.
  • Drive architectural decisions that balance long-term system health with the pragmatic pace of a high-velocity organization.
  • Establish and evolve engineering norms, including the use of AI-assisted development, code review standards, and build vs. buy vs. adopt decisions.
  • Mentor and elevate engineers across squads through quality reviews, RFCs, and technical conversations.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to shape the roadmap from a technical perspective, surfacing constraints and opportunities.
