Staff Software Engineer - Data

About The Position

Dune is seeking a Staff Software Engineer - Data to join their collaborative multi-chain analytics platform. This role is part of the Data Foundation team, responsible for how blockchain data enters Dune, its representation, and external delivery. The ideal candidate will have experience with large distributed data systems, scaling patterns, and software lifecycle pitfalls. This position involves translating ambiguous product requirements into technical designs, breaking down complex problems, and driving high-impact architectural decisions for the data platform. The engineer will own components end-to-end, working across Go, Kotlin, Rust, and Python, and designing for correctness and performance in large-scale ingestion, distributed processing, and data lake storage. The role also includes raising the bar on design reviews, testing, and mentoring engineers in a fully distributed team.

Requirements

  • Strong generalist with real computer science fundamentals, and ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and problem spaces
  • Ability to reason from first principles: make assumptions explicit, identify constraints and invariants, and derive solutions
  • Experience designing and shipping distributed data systems, making their contracts, state transitions, invariants, and failure modes explicit
  • Comfortable with ambiguity: ability to talk to product, customers, and the team, then commit to and defend a scope
  • Proficiency with AI tools such that they have changed how you work, understanding their failure modes
  • Clear written communication skills and ability to get the best out of a distributed team

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with data lakes and formats such as Parquet, Iceberg or Deltalog
  • Experience at a company where the data is the product

Responsibilities

  • Turn product requirements into technical requirements: model the domain, define the interfaces and the workflows, and navigate trade-offs
  • Break large problems into work other engineers can own, and sequence it so we ship something useful early
  • Drive high-impact architectural decisions across the data platform, and own components end to end from design through production
  • Work across our stack, mainly Go, Kotlin, Rust and Python where they fit, choosing the right tool rather than the familiar one
  • Design for correctness and performance under real volume: large-scale ingestion, distributed processing, and data lake storage
  • Raise the bar on design reviews, testing, and how the team breaks work down
  • Mentor engineers by example, in a fully distributed team

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity package (top 25% of companies in the space)
  • World-class employee-friendly equity scheme with a heavily discounted strike price (~90%) and a 10-year exercise window
  • 5 weeks PTO + local public holidays (swappable)
  • Fully remote-first approach within a distributed team with flexible working hours
  • Async and sync work balance to avoid meeting overload
  • Private medical insurance, dental & vision
  • 16 weeks fully paid parental leave for primary caregivers
  • 6 weeks fully paid parental leave for secondary caregivers
  • 2-week part-time phased return at full pay after parental leave
  • Quarterly offsites in various locations
  • Yearly travel allowance to connect and co-work with others
  • Allowance for at-home setup or co-working space desk payment
  • Dune swag
