About The Position

Dune is building market data solutions for institutional customers who need timely, accurate, reliable financial data. The team turns onchain activity into real-time feeds and associated reference data, alongside historical data capture. In this hands-on Staff Engineer role, you will work on Dune’s new market data platform and help shape its evolution as features and the customer base grow. You will design systems that scale across chains, protocols, and product capabilities while balancing correctness, latency, reliability, and cost. You will turn ambiguous requirements into designs and deliverable work, implement difficult parts yourself, and help other engineers take ownership of meaningful parts of the platform. AI-assisted development is a core part of the expected workflow, supported by strong engineering judgment and ownership of delivered work. You will own services through deployment and production support, participate in the team’s on-call rotation, and lead technical decisions across team boundaries. You will write clear designs, mentor engineers through implementation and review, and use AI to explore designs, implement changes, build tests, investigate failures, and improve documentation. The role is part of a distributed, remote-first team with flexible working hours.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating distributed backend or data services with demanding reliability and performance requirements.
  • Ability to understand failure modes and debug problems across service and data boundaries.
  • Experience with real-time streaming systems, including concurrency, state management, backpressure, and recovery.
  • Attention to data correctness, including timestamps, numeric precision, schema changes, and corrections.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals and backend engineering skills.
  • Ability to turn ambiguous requirements into pragmatic designs and production services, and help other engineers deliver parts of the solution.
  • Clear written communication and ability to work effectively with a distributed team.
  • Financial or market data experience at a financial institution.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Rust, Go, or comparable languages.
  • Onchain data experience, such as blockchain indexing with EVM or Solana.
  • Reference data experience, such as instrument and entity masters, identifier mapping, effective-dated records, or tokenized asset and fund data.
  • Experience at a company where data is the product.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build distributed systems for ingestion, normalization, processing, storage, and delivery of real-time market data from blockchain and other relevant sources.
  • Build and operate streaming solutions that handle event ordering, timestamps, duplicates, replay, gaps, and recovery, including blockchain reorganizations and finality where they affect customer data.
  • Build reliable client feeds and APIs with clear delivery contracts, schema evolution, access controls, and predictable behavior under load or when consumers fall behind.
  • Partner with teams across Dune on reference data models and historical data capture.
  • Define and improve service objectives and data quality measures.
  • Instrument latency, freshness, completeness, and correctness, and turn incidents into lasting improvements in recovery and operations.
  • Debug independently and drive root cause analysis through to durable fixes.
  • Own services through deployment and production support, including participation in the team’s on-call rotation.
  • Use AI throughout development to explore designs, implement changes, build tests, investigate failures, and improve documentation; develop repeatable workflows and share effective practices with the team.
  • Lead technical decisions across team boundaries, write clear designs, and mentor engineers through implementation and review.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity package; salary and equity are described as top 25% of companies in the space.
  • Employee equity scheme with a heavily discounted strike price (approximately 90%) and a 10-year exercise window.
  • Five weeks of paid time off plus local public holidays, which can be swapped to suit the employee.
  • Fully remote-first work with flexible working hours.
  • Private medical insurance, dental insurance, and vision insurance.
  • Sixteen weeks of fully paid leave for primary caregivers and six weeks for secondary caregivers.
  • Two-week part-time phased return at full pay after parental leave.
  • Quarterly company or team offsites.
  • Yearly travel allowance for coworking with a colleague or team.
  • Allowance for a home office setup or payment for a local coworking desk.
  • Company swag.
