As a Staff Software Engineer on the Billing team, you will be instrumental in ensuring Zocdoc's financial infrastructure is robust and innovative, supporting the healthcare marketplace and its expanding product suite. Your role involves leading the evolution of billing systems into a flexible, best-in-class platform capable of accommodating diverse pricing models, including new AI-driven innovations like Zo. This work is critical for providing clarity to providers regarding their payments and demonstrating Zocdoc's value, while also automating complex manual workflows for the Finance team, thereby enabling reinvestment into new opportunities for patients. As a technical leader, you will drive high-visibility projects from inception to launch, mentor engineers, and make architectural decisions that will define the scalability of Zocdoc's billing platform for years to come. Zocdoc is 18 years old and a leader in its space, backed by leading investors, and is committed to building diverse teams.

Requirements

Meaningful (8+) years of engineering experience building and scaling high-performance backend services, ETLs, and APIs within event-driven, distributed systems—ideally in environments where data reliability and integrity are paramount.
Familiarity with cloud-native environments (e.g., AWS) and the desire to own your team’s infrastructure (as code!).
The mentality of an owner with an unrelenting desire to drive projects to completion; you view ambiguity as an opportunity to provide technical clarity rather than a blocker.
Integrated generative AI tools into daily workflows to automate tasks, foster innovation, and maximize productivity.
Leadership experience steering teams toward best-in-class testing, deployment, and observability practices that amplify output and quality.
Superb communication skills! You believe in keeping all of your stakeholders and teammates in the loop and know that multiple mediums of communication are the key to success.

Responsibilities

Leading the architectural direction of Zocdoc's billing system as we build for the future - thinking how we can scale billing as the number of providers, patients, and products we support grow.
Building, maintaining, and improving modern, event driven workflow billing workflows and pricing algorithm systems.
Collaborating with Finance, Product, & Design to figure out how we can solve for provider and internal billing needs with efficient technical solutions.
Working with your engineering peers to define and implement best practices that ensure high code quality and system reliability for all new features and services.
Ensuring the ongoing accuracy and stability of the billing engine and financial data, and triaging any issues that arise (always with the team’s support).
Integrating the latest edge GenAI tools and technology to optimize technical planning and coding efficiency across your team and the broader engineering organization.
