About The Position

CVS Health Digital is seeking a hands-on Staff Software Development Engineer to build and operate backend, platform, and integration services at scale. The role designs and delivers highly available, secure, and compliant microservices that support healthcare data exchange and platform capabilities. It requires strong experience with Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, event-driven systems, cloud-native environments, and regulated domains. The engineer partners with product, architecture, security, and DevOps teams to deliver reliable services that integrate with healthcare ecosystems and third-party platforms. Responsibilities include service design and development, cloud deployment and operations, security and compliance, production readiness and reliability, observability, and technical collaboration and mentorship.

Requirements

At least 7 years of professional software development experience with Java/JEE and Spring Boot.
At least 5 years building RESTful microservices and distributed systems.
Strong understanding of REST API design, JSON data modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
At least 5 years of practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads, including Docker; Kubernetes is preferred.
At least 3 years operating production services in cloud environments, preferably GCP.
At least 3 years of experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
At least 3 years of experience with security fundamentals, including OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, and secrets management.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, defined as a high school diploma plus 4 years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

Strong debugging, performance profiling, and operational troubleshooting skills.
Experience in healthcare, regulated systems, or large-scale data integration platforms.
A cloud certification such as GCP Professional DevOps Engineer, AWS DevOps Engineer, or equivalent.
Familiarity with Spanner, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, or similar managed data services.
Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and alerting systems such as Grafana and Splunk.
Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain Java/JEE and Spring Boot backend microservices, exposing secure, performant, and resilient RESTful APIs.
Implement event-driven patterns with Apache Kafka, including producers and consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, and consumer groups.
Model and exchange JSON data, ensuring validation, versioning, and backward compatibility.
Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines incorporating testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery.
Integrate automated security controls with Security and DevOps teams, including SAST, DAST, dependency and image scanning, and secrets management.
Deploy and operate services on Google Cloud Platform using cloud-native patterns such as GKE or Cloud Run, IAM, and managed data services.
Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management best practices.
Integrate backend services with EHR systems and healthcare data standards or formats such as HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and CCD/C-CDA.
Ensure compliance with HIPAA, data governance, and platform security requirements, including encryption in transit and at rest.
Own production readiness, including availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency for high-volume backend services.
Diagnose and resolve production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive reliability improvements using SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.
Implement structured logging, metrics, and tracing to support proactive monitoring and incident response.
Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions, and mentor junior engineers.
