CVS Health Digital is seeking a hands-on Staff Software Development Engineer to build and operate backend, platform, and integration services at scale. The role designs and delivers highly available, secure, and compliant microservices that support healthcare data exchange and platform capabilities. It requires strong Java, Spring Boot, RESTful API, and event-driven systems experience, cloud-native operating skills, and familiarity with regulated domains. The engineer partners with product, architecture, security, and DevOps teams to deliver reliable services integrated with healthcare ecosystems and third-party platforms. The position owns service delivery and operations, including production readiness, availability, latency, throughput, cost efficiency, observability, incident response, and long-term reliability. It also participates in architecture and code reviews, technical design discussions, and mentoring junior engineers.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software development experience with Java/JEE and Spring Boot.
  • 5+ years building RESTful microservices and distributed systems, with a strong understanding of REST API design, JSON data modeling, and OpenAPI/Swagger documentation.
  • 5+ years of practical experience with CI/CD pipelines and containerized workloads, including Docker; Kubernetes is preferred.
  • 3+ years operating production services in cloud environments, preferably GCP.
  • 3+ years of experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
  • 3+ years of experience with security fundamentals, including OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, and secrets management.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; alternatively, a high school diploma plus 4 years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong debugging, performance profiling, and operational troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience in healthcare, regulated systems, or large-scale data integration platforms.
  • Cloud certification, such as GCP Professional DevOps Engineer, AWS DevOps Engineer, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with Spanner, BigQuery, Cloud SQL, or similar managed data services.
  • Familiarity with observability, monitoring, and alerting systems such as Grafana or Splunk.
  • Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP).

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices using Java/JEE and Spring Boot, exposing secure, performant, and resilient RESTful APIs.
  • Implement event-driven patterns with Apache Kafka, including producers and consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, and consumer groups.
  • Model and exchange JSON data with robust validation, versioning, and backward compatibility.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for unit and integration testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery.
  • Partner with Security and DevOps teams to integrate automated security controls, including SAST, DAST, dependency and image scanning, and secrets management.
  • Deploy and operate services on Google Cloud Platform using cloud-native patterns such as GKE or Cloud Run, IAM, and managed data services.
  • Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management best practices.
  • Integrate backend services with EHR systems and healthcare data standards such as HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and CCD/C-CDA, or similar regulated data exchange formats.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, data governance, and platform security requirements, including encryption in transit and at rest.
  • Own production readiness for high-volume backend services, including availability, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive long-term reliability improvements using SLIs/SLOs and error budgets.
  • Implement structured logging, metrics, and tracing to support proactive monitoring and incident response.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical design discussions, and mentor junior engineers.
