Wealthsimple Technologies,
Hybrid

About The Position

Wealthsimple is Canada’s leading financial innovator, offering a comprehensive suite of financial products. The company is seeking a Staff Software Developer for the Production Engineering team, which is part of Platform Experience. This team focuses on enhancing reliability across Wealthsimple's critical financial flows by reducing incidents, enabling safe service deployments, and implementing platform-wide improvements. The Production Engineering team aims for 99.9% uptime on critical flows and less than 1% of weekly active users experiencing errors. This is a new role designed to bring senior technical leadership to scale Wealthsimple's reliability. The Staff Software Developer will collaborate across platform and product teams to identify high-leverage reliability issues and build scalable solutions that improve engineering practices company-wide.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time in platform, infrastructure, or SRE work.
  • Demonstrated track record of improving reliability at scale (reducing incidents, building guardrails, or driving operational standards across multiple teams).
  • Strong proficiency in backend systems and distributed architecture; ability to diagnose complex failure modes across a service mesh.
  • Experience with load testing and capacity planning, and ability to translate findings into concrete engineering improvements.
  • Proven ability to work across engineering teams as a technical influencer, driving adoption of standards and practices without direct authority.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes, Helm, Argo and modern deployment tooling.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable presenting findings and recommendations to engineering teams and senior leadership.
  • Systems thinking approach to problem-solving.
  • Comfort working without direct authority and building credibility through quality of thinking and clarity of recommendations.
  • High bar for operational excellence and ability to bring others along.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and prioritize effectively.
  • Curiosity about AI-assisted tooling in reliability engineering and a desire to shape its use.

Responsibilities

  • Improve the platform to prevent incidents by designing and driving adoption of guardrails, sensible defaults, and engineering standards.
  • Build tooling to reduce time to mitigation during incidents, including contributing to AI-assisted incident response products.
  • Investigate load test findings and translate them into concrete reliability improvements across critical flows.
  • Act as a technical influencer across platform and product engineering teams, participating in architecture and readiness reviews, coaching service owners, and driving adoption of scalable reliability practices.
  • Identify recurring failure patterns and design platform-level fixes to prevent their recurrence.
  • Contribute to reliability syncs with product engineering to align on incident themes, critical-flow risks, and high-leverage initiatives.
