The UTSC Campus Safety is responsible for the protection and safety of students, staff and visitors of the campus. Its delivery model is based on a community engagement philosophy which encourages an interactive partnership between Campus Safety and members of the community to facilitate a team approach to safety. Working under the direction of the Assistant Director, Campus Safety, the Staff Sergeant is responsible for directing and managing an operational unit including Corporals, Constables, and Building Patrol staff working on rotating shifts. The Staff Sergeant leads the campus safety services in a receptive and genuine partnership with the University community in providing a reliable 24-hour response to emergencies and enforcement of the rules, including providing campus safety, security, emergency first response and limited law enforcement services to the University of Toronto Scarborough community. The Staff Sergeant will perform the role of the Assistant Director, Campus Safety during absences.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary diploma/education in law enforcement and the Ontario Police College Front Line Supervisor course or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least five (5) years’ experience with a recognized law enforcement agency, preferably in a university setting or other post-secondary educational institution campus safety setting.
  • 2 years’ demonstrated supervisory experience, in a unionized or similar environment.
  • Experience interpreting Collective Agreements.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing/conducting investigations.
  • Strong report writing skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills in Word and Excel.
  • Ability to operate Special Constable equipment to a recognized standard.
  • Valid (Class G) driver’s license.
  • Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to motivate staff and build a team.
  • Ability to relate to and address the needs of the community, especially young adults.
  • Ability to interact professionally and appropriately with the students, faculty and staff of UTSC.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the applicable laws, legislations and codes (e.g., Criminal Code, Human Rights Code, etc.).
  • Understanding and commitment to community-based initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a highly diverse community.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Integrity, tact, diplomacy and initiative.
  • Certified in appropriate licensing and training (i.e., Use of Force, CPR, First Aid) as required by your Special Constable Appointment.
  • Must receive a Toronto Police Security Clearance as a condition of employment.
  • Must qualify for appointment as a Special Constable with Toronto Police.
  • Evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment.
