Staff Research Associate

University of California, San Francisco•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

The Physiology Department is hiring a Staff Research Associate I to support histological studies in the gut. The position works closely with lab members to carry out experiments and analyze data, under supervision. Research focuses on the role of adrenergic receptor signaling in the gut in stress-induced visceral pain. The associate performs mouse experiments; conducts RNAscope in situ hybridization and related immunostaining on intestinal and related tissues; acquires and analyzes microscopy images; and manages the experimental data workflow, including statistical analysis and preparation of figures and tables. The role also involves presenting results at lab meetings, maintaining lab notebooks, preparing reagents and solutions, supporting lab organization and ordering, and drafting written summaries for review by the principal investigator.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in biological sciences or a related science, and knowledge of or experience with the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with basic concepts in molecular biology and neuroscience.
  • Familiarity with basic methodologies for assessing gene expression by histological techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, perform mouse experiments studying the role of adrenergic receptor signaling in the gut in stress-induced visceral pain.
  • Perform RNAscope in situ hybridization and related immunostaining on intestinal and related tissues, including tissue collection, fixation, sectioning, staining, and imaging.
  • Manage the data workflow for experiments, including selecting appropriate statistical tests for RNAscope quantification data, performing calculations, compiling results across animals and conditions, and preparing figures and tables for lab meetings and manuscripts.
  • Acquire images using brightfield, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy, and perform image processing and quantification.
  • Analyze and organize experimental data, generate figures and summary statistics, and present results at lab meetings.
  • Maintain detailed lab notebooks, prepare reagents and solutions, and assist with general lab organization and ordering.
  • Draft written summaries of experimental rationale, methods, results, and preliminary interpretations for the principal investigator to review and incorporate into presentations, grant reports, and publications.
