Staff Research Associate

UCSF•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

The Physiology Department is hiring a Staff Research Associate I to support histological studies in the gut. The associate will work closely with lab members to carry out experiments and analyze data, including studies of adrenergic receptor signaling in the gut and stress-induced visceral pain.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in biological sciences or a related science, and knowledge of or experience with basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with basic concepts in molecular biology and neuroscience.
  • Familiarity with basic methodologies for assessing gene expression by histological techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, perform mouse experiments to study the role of adrenergic receptor signaling in the gut in stress-induced visceral pain.
  • Perform RNAscope in situ hybridization and related immunostaining on intestinal and related tissues, including tissue collection, fixation, sectioning, staining, and imaging.
  • Manage the experimental data workflow: select appropriate statistical tests for RNAscope quantification data, perform calculations in GraphPad Prism or R, compile results across animals and conditions, and prepare figures and tables for lab meetings and manuscripts.
  • Acquire images using brightfield, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy; perform image processing and quantification using tools such as ImageJ/Fiji and QuPath.
  • Analyze and organize experimental data, generate figures and summary statistics using tools such as Excel, GraphPad Prism, R, or Python, and present results at lab meetings.
  • Maintain detailed lab notebooks, prepare reagents and solutions, and assist with general lab organization and ordering.
  • Draft written summaries of experimental rationale, methods, results, and preliminary interpretations for review by the principal investigator and potential incorporation into presentations, grant reports, and publications.
