About The Position

Inc. Business Media is seeking a Staff Reporter to cover the dynamic intersection of AI, entrepreneurship, and business innovation. This role is designed for a journalist who can deliver sharp, timely reporting to help founders understand how emerging technologies are transforming business creation, scaling, and operations. The ideal candidate possesses strong news judgment and the ability to develop in-depth, reported stories, adeptly handling quick-turn coverage, service journalism, and enterprise features. They will be responsible for their beat, generating story ideas, and producing impactful content on major AI players and promising startups relevant to founders and entrepreneurs. This position reports to the Tech Editor and collaborates closely with editors and the audience team to ensure coverage is timely, useful, and consistent with Inc.'s mission and voice. The role operates on a 3-day hybrid schedule, with Tuesdays through Thursdays spent onsite in the New York City office. This position is covered under the Writers Guild of America East Collective Bargaining Agreement. The salary range is $77,000 - $90,000, with eligibility for a bonus. Compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.

Requirements

2–4 years of reporting experience, preferably in AI, business, or technology.
Proven ability to consistently generate story ideas and produce a high volume of content.
Strong track record of writing stories that reach large audiences and provide clear value to readers.
Skilled in translating technical concepts into understandable explanations for nontechnical audiences.
Ability to break news, develop sources, and conduct original reporting.
Comfortable balancing speed and depth, from daily news to more ambitious stories, with a commitment to accuracy.
Understanding of digital publishing best practices, including SEO, Discover optimization, data analytics, and performance tracking.
Strong understanding of Inc. Business Media's audience: founders, operators, and growth-minded leaders.
Collaborative, self-directed, and highly organized.
Authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. (sponsorship for employment visas is not provided).

Responsibilities

Write approximately 20 stories per month, including breaking news, service stories, and in-depth reporting.
Pitch story ideas daily, emphasizing originality and audience relevance.
Own and develop a core beat focused on AI for founders and business leaders, identifying emerging opportunities.
Break news and advance original reporting by engaging with founders, executives, and industry experts.
Translate complex topics into clear, actionable insights for readers.
Collaborate with social, video, and other teams to amplify the reach of key stories.
Contribute to Inc. events and editorial initiatives as needed.
