DutiesFunction in a lead engineer capacity, or technical specialist, focused on Relay Settings; Perform all aspects of conventional design engineering and analysis; Expand knowledge and skill set in area of expertise and also and in other disciplines and/or functional areas. Apply advanced engineering techniques and analyses for problems and methods; Develop logic programming and downloadable relay setpoint files for protection of transmission lines, transformers, bus bars, and circuit breakers using modern digital relay devices and legacy-electronic and electro-mechanical relays; Provide technical guidance for a variety of relay settings protection schemes; Provide technical guidance for various NERC compliance studies for renewable integration substations eg PRC 24, PRC 19, PRC 25 etc. Technical lead for PRC 27 coordination. Continue to learn, remain current and apply independent knowledge and interpretation about departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures relative to assigned tasks; Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables including protective relay fault calculations following prudent engineering practices and in conformance to client and industry standards; Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection; Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements; Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria; Lead smaller production teams and review lower-level engineering work or assignments; Overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work; Serve as the responsible charge for a project; Oversee technical engineering drawing designs including one-lines, three-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment; Assist with the design of one-line and wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels using computer assisted design (CAD) software; Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects; Supervise project progression and perform quality assurance and quality control of relay design, SCADA design, and protection setting packages; Perform short circuit system analysis, modeling, and coordination studies for transmission systems; Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects; Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects; Provide support to business development or pursuit activities; Recognized as a technical specialist by the division having in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of an industry; Design a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area(s); and assist with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required. No hire/fire authority. Project Lead, but no direct supervision of other professionals. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field plus 3 years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field plus 5 years of related experience
  • Must have passed PE exam
  • Developing logic programming and downloadable relay setpoint files for protection of transmission lines, transformers, bus bars, and circuit breakers using modern digital relay devices and legacy-electronic and electro-mechanical relays
  • Technical engineering drawing designs including one-lines, three-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment
  • Design of one-line and wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels using computer assisted design (CAD) software
  • Quality assurance and quality control of relay design, SCADA design, and protection setting packages
  • Short circuit system analysis, modeling, and coordination studies for transmission systems
  • Experience with SEL and GE protection relays
  • Experience with software tools including SEL Quickset AccSELerator, SEL Architect, ETAP, ASPEN, CAPE, and Mathcad
  • Experience managing project budgets
  • Mentoring lesser experienced team members
  • Representing the employer in key internal and external meetings
  • Experience with NERC compliance studies
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, and SV) and its implementation
  • Must report to office in Cary, NC, but also permitted to work from home on a hybrid schedule
  • Travel to project sites in the U.S. up to 10% of the time
  • Good written and verbal communications skills in English
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations
