Staff Psychiatrist - Detention Booking
About The Position
Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is seeking a Staff Psychiatrist for its Detention Booking Services at the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex in San Jose, CA. This role involves providing initial psychiatric evaluations for arrested patients, initiating or continuing treatment, and admitting patients to the inpatient unit if necessary. The psychiatrist will work within a correctional facility using a direct supervision model, with an average caseload of 7-14 cases per shift during 16-hour daily shifts (7 AM – 11 PM PT). The role may also involve covering the acute inpatient unit if needed. Access to a clinical social worker is available for triaging less acute patients.
Requirements
- Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
- Board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry.
- Valid California medical license.
- Experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
- Ability to work in a correctional or secure environment.
- Willingness to cover inpatient psychiatric unit duties as needed.

Responsibilities
- Provide initial psychiatric evaluation for arrested patients.
- Start or continue treatment for patients.
- Admit patients to the inpatient unit if necessary.
- Assist in covering the acute inpatient unit for up to 10 hours if the unit is not fully covered.
- Provide clinical support in the inpatient unit as needed.
- Triage less acute patients with the assistance of a clinical social worker when the unit is busy.
