About The Position

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is seeking a Staff Psychiatrist for its Detention Booking Services at the Santa Clara County Main Jail Complex in San Jose, CA. This role involves providing initial psychiatric evaluations for arrested patients, initiating or continuing treatment, and admitting patients to the inpatient unit if necessary. The psychiatrist will work within a correctional facility using a direct supervision model, with an average caseload of 7-14 cases per shift during 16-hour daily shifts (7 AM – 11 PM PT). The position may also involve covering the acute inpatient unit if needed. Access to a clinical social worker is available for triaging less acute patients. The inpatient unit cases are similar to other acute psychiatric inpatient units in the community.

Requirements

Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree.
Board certification or eligibility in Psychiatry.
Valid California medical license.
Experience in psychiatric evaluation and treatment.
Ability to work in a correctional environment.
Willingness to cover inpatient unit duties as needed.
