Staff Product Engineer

Trust & Will

About The Position

Trust & Will is hiring a Staff Product Engineer, a staff-level individual contributor with company-wide scope. The role owns product and engineering work from customer or business need through production and continues to support it after launch. It combines product judgment, full-stack engineering, and agent-driven development, with close partnership across product management, design, and engineering. The engineer may independently carry projects end to end or partner with others as the work requires. The role involves shaping problems and business cases with product managers, contributing to scope and sequencing decisions, and partnering with engineering leaders and senior engineers on architecture, design reviews, and technical direction. The engineer engages directly with members, advisors, attorneys, and internal teams to understand use cases, then designs and ships changes across the platform, including user interfaces, services, data, and integrations. Testing, safe releases, production visibility, and explicit tradeoffs are expected parts of delivery. The engineer also moves between product areas as priorities change and helps leave reusable systems and practices behind. Trust & Will is a remote-first company. This position is available only to candidates residing in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Nevada, or Utah. A collaborative co-working space in San Diego is available but not required. The company describes its approach as AI-first: engineers specify outcomes, constraints, and acceptance criteria for coding agents; build in tests, evaluations, automated checks, and production signals; govern agent permissions and boundaries; and handle escalations and higher-risk work with human oversight. Candidates must discuss a real outcome they delegated to agents during the interview, including validation and where a person stepped in. The salary range is $225,000–$250,000, plus equity and the listed benefits. Applications are accepted through 10/26/26, subject to possible extension.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years building and shipping customer-facing software, or equivalent depth, including work at staff, principal, or lead level.
  • Staff-level product judgment, including framing ambiguous problems, defining success, setting scope, and deciding what not to build.
  • Staff-level engineering depth in system design across user interfaces, APIs, and relational data, with sound tradeoffs among speed, reliability, and long-term maintainability.
  • A record of shipping work from idea to production, with or without a detailed specification, and owning results after launch.
  • Experience partnering as a peer with product managers, designers, and engineering leaders, and bringing decisions through design and architecture review.
  • Comfort working directly with customers and non-technical partners and turning their input into scope.
  • Care for quality, security, and production reliability, especially for products handling sensitive personal and financial information.
  • Ability to influence without formal authority through clear writing, explicit tradeoffs, pairing, and example.
  • Must reside in one of the listed eligible states: CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, MD, NJ, NY, NC, PA, TN, TX, VT, NV, or UT.
  • Must walk through a real outcome delegated to agents during the interview, including how it was validated and where a person intervened.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in regulated or high-trust products, such as financial services, legal, insurance, or health.
  • Founder, founding engineer, or early product engineer experience building a product from scratch.
  • Experience writing product specifications, running customer research, or working in product management.
  • Experience leading cross-team work that left a team with a better way to build.
  • Experience working on high-autonomy, remote-first teams where problems arrive loosely defined.

Responsibilities

  • Own product and engineering work from intake through launch, and remain accountable after it ships.
  • Partner with product managers to frame problems, understand customers and business cases, set scope and sequencing, and determine what not to build.
  • Partner with engineering leaders and senior engineers on architecture, design reviews, and technical direction.
  • Speak directly with members, advisors, attorneys, and internal teams to understand use cases.
  • Design and ship across the platform, including UI, services, data, and integrations.
  • Carry projects end to end, working with others when appropriate.
  • Build testing, safe release practices, and production visibility into work, and make tradeoffs explicit.
  • Move across product areas as priorities change, pair with others, and leave reusable systems for the team.
  • Specify outcomes and boundaries for coding agents, build validation into systems, address escalations, and help other engineers safely delegate whole outcomes to AI agents.
