Staff Product Designer

VitalizeSan Francisco, CA
$230,000 - $300,000Hybrid

About The Position

Hospitals still run their most important operations — staffing, labor planning, and capacity — on paper, spreadsheets, and guesswork. It's a system that wastes thousands of hours and millions of dollars every year. Vitalize replaces this with intelligent, automated staffing operations. Our platform brings real-time decision support to clinical leaders, eliminating manual work, reducing unnecessary labor spend, and unlocking patient capacity for hospitals. AI is increasingly carrying weight inside the product — recommendations, automation, audit trails — which raises the design ceiling and the design risk in equal measure. We're already live across 20+ hospitals, near 8-figures in revenue, and have raised $34M in total funding from top investors. We’re scaling fast.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of product design experience, ideally on complex, workflow-heavy B2B SaaS products.
  • Shipped real features to real users and can discuss the business impact of your work.
  • Owned a design system or comparable infrastructure that others have built upon, including designing the contribution model.
  • Comfortable spending time in the field, observing operational workflows firsthand, and willing to travel to customer sites regularly.
  • Mature product instincts, with a focus on designing workflow changes rather than just UI improvements.
  • Opinionated, evidence-backed, and direct communication style.
  • Customer-obsessed with an instinct for business outcomes, able to connect design to metrics.
  • AI-fluent, with experience on product surfaces where AI performs real work and an informed point of view on AI's UI representation.
  • A multiplier from day one, enjoying critique, mentoring, and infrastructure work.
  • Ability to point to a system someone else built on, not just concept-heavy portfolios.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in healthcare, logistics, financial operations, or similarly complex operational domains.
  • Experience with the operating-model pattern in our product (expert-in-the-loop workflow automation, cost-aware recommendations, audit-trail integrity).

Responsibilities

  • Own complex product surfaces that cross pod boundaries, including recommendation surfaces, AI-driven workflows, and data-dense decision-support tools.
  • Set the standards for the design team, including taste documents, pattern examples, critique norms, and the process for writing design rationale and resolving disagreements with engineering.
  • Work directly with customers by visiting hospitals and observing workflows to shape product development.
  • Shape the growth of the design team by contributing to hiring loops, critique culture, onboarding patterns, and design operating principles.
  • Set the pace for the use of design systems, including components, tokens, patterns, contribution models, documentation, and the relationship between Figma and the codebase.
  • Multiply the output of the entire design team by leading by example and owning critical design initiatives.
  • Establish patterns for how AI shows its reasoning in the UI for clinical staff under time pressure.
