As a Staff Product Designer, you will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of BetterUp’s platform and design language, setting the vision for how products, tools, and experiences integrate seamlessly. This involves balancing user empathy with system-level thinking, collaborating with product, research, engineering, and cross-functional design leaders to define experience architecture, mentoring senior designers, and ensuring the design system evolves with elegance and rigor. You will also have the opportunity to lead and develop a small team of designers and influence design quality and strategy across the broader organization.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of product design experience with deep expertise in system-level design, platform thinking, and multi-surface experiences.
  • Proven success leading design strategy and execution for high-impact, high-complexity initiatives.
  • A portfolio showcasing visionary work that balances clarity, craft, and strategic insight.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence product direction at a senior leadership level.
  • Experience mentoring and leading other designers, fostering both autonomy and alignment.
  • Mastery in information architecture, interaction design, and visual systems thinking.
  • Exceptional communication skills and a track record of uniting stakeholders around a shared vision.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design vision and strategy for cross-product experiences that serve diverse users and customers at scale.
  • Lead end-to-end design for complex systems and user journeys that span multiple product surfaces.
  • Partner with senior product, research, and engineering leaders to shape product direction and long-term roadmaps.
  • Translate abstract problems into clear frameworks and design principles that guide teams toward cohesive outcomes.
  • Advance our design system to enable flexibility, consistency, and innovation across BetterUp’s ecosystem.
  • Mentor and elevate designers through feedback, critique, and hands-on guidance—building a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
  • Model thoughtful leadership by balancing business goals, user impact, and design craft.
  • Anticipate industry-shifting AI capabilities and position BetterUp to leverage them ahead of competitors in how we design and build product experiences.
  • Lead enterprise-wide AI transformation initiatives within the Design org that span multiple functions and product surfaces.
  • Drive technical vision for how AI will reshape product capabilities and development practices over 3–5 year horizons.
  • Build AI research and experimentation programs that discover breakthrough design applications before they become industry standard.
  • Mentor senior leaders and peers on AI strategy, helping them think critically about emerging technologies and their implications for design craft.
