Staff Product Designer

DialpadSan Ramon, CA
$174,000 - $220,500

About The Position

Dialpad is seeking a Staff Product Designer to be a key design leader in shaping how AI is integrated into their platform. This role involves meeting customer needs, driving AI adoption within the team, and contributing to the future of business communications for both humans and AI. The Design team at Dialpad is at the forefront of innovation, fully embracing AI in their work and reshaping how AI is experienced by customers. The ideal candidate is comfortable with both design tools and code, views AI as a design medium, and is passionate about the evolving field of design. Portfolios should showcase impactful, high-craft work, with a recent emphasis on AI-native design practices. The company has a strong foundation in real-time communication services and AI solutions, with extensive experience in transcribing calls and meetings.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of shipping high-quality product design work, with a track record of impact on platform-level or foundational design surfaces (design systems, infrastructure, AI capabilities, integrations, or patterns/primitives).
  • Treated AI as a medium to design in, not a feature to add, and shaped how previous teams practiced AI.
  • Built personal AI tooling (skills, agents, micro-apps, CLI workflows) beyond chat-window prompting.
  • Shipped code into production codebases and used coded prototypes as a primary thinking and validation tool.
  • Designed patterns, components, or systems consumed by other designers and engineers at scale.
  • Driven work end-to-end autonomously, owning outcomes.
  • Pixel-level craft and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills across various audiences (team, manager, design org, cross-functional stakeholders).
  • Mentored other designers and elevated the work of those around you.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguous, complex projects autonomously while maintaining clear asynchronous updates.
  • Systems thinking for designing cohesive experiences and reducing system debt.

Nice To Haves

  • Shipped AI-native products, agentic workflows, or conversational interfaces.
  • Built internal tooling, prototyping infrastructure, or developer-facing design systems that were adopted.
  • Maintain a personal practice (side projects, open source, writing, experiments) to advance craft.
  • Experience in SaaS, communications, contact centers, or real-time collaboration platforms.
  • Helped evolve or scale a design system, including tooling and adoption mechanics.
  • Contribute to the broader design community (writing, speaking, open source, mentoring).

Responsibilities

  • Lead design on foundational layers and platform-wide initiatives.
  • Partner with leadership to set direction for platform work.
  • Define patterns, primitives, and interaction models for other designers and teams.
  • Ship production code alongside engineering.
  • Build production-realistic coded prototypes with real data.
  • Design AI-first capabilities and infrastructure with a focus on trust, transparency, and user control.
  • Build personal AI tooling (skills, agents, micro-apps) to enhance the team's AI practice.
  • Strengthen and evolve Dialtone, the design system.
  • Identify cross-cutting problems and opportunities.
  • Mentor designers, provide feedback, and coach peers on craft, communication, and AI fluency.
  • Improve team shipping, communication, and collaboration processes.
  • Navigate ambiguous, complex projects autonomously.
  • Think in systems to design cohesive experiences and reduce system debt.
