Staff Product Designer - Agent Experience

Render
$218,000 - $300,000

About The Position

Render is building the modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. Our mission is to eliminate the tradeoff between the power of hyperscalers and the simplicity of developer-friendly platforms. We offer a developer-first experience with persistent compute, dynamic autoscaling, built-in orchestration, and observability, allowing teams to launch, scale, and manage real-world applications without writing infrastructure code or managing servers. Render is trusted by over 6 million developers worldwide and recently raised $100M in Series C financing. We are a diverse and talented team that values craft, velocity, and user experience. We are seeking candidates who possess high integrity, humility, and an insatiable drive to learn, fostering an environment of mutual trust and respect. We encourage members of underrepresented groups in the tech community to apply. Our interview process is unique to each role and values the candidate experience. Render's mission is to eliminate the undifferentiated work that goes into building software products. As we grow into the place to deploy AI-native apps and agents, we design for two users at once — developers and the agents working on their behalf, treating the agent as a first-class customer. This role owns Agent Experience (AX) end to end — the whole programmatic surface and the whole loop: an agent deploys, a human reviews what happened, the agent hits an error and recovers, the human grants it exactly the access it needs. Your job is to design the loop as one product, spanning the CLI, API, MCP, SDKs, Blueprints and Skills, documentation, and web UI. We think about agent-native design in three areas: the interfaces agents need to operate, the human ↔ agent handoff, and trust, safety, and governance. This role owns all three. You'll inherit an AX audit and scoring framework, a developer community that trusts the product, and a design team treating agent experience as a first-class discipline.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of product design experience, ideally on developer tools, infrastructure, APIs, or another technical, credibility-driven product.
  • Experience owning a major surface or product area end to end and setting the direction others built against.
  • Craft that spans GUI and non-GUI surfaces, with rigor applied to CLI messages, API ergonomics, and SDK methods as well as web UI.
  • Portfolio showing strong web UI work alongside text-first thinking (command design, API ergonomics, MCP/SDK design, docs-as-experience, or conversational interfaces).
  • Portfolio showing end-to-end experiences where a user is carried coherently across interface boundaries (CLI to API to SDK to dashboard and back).
  • A genuine point of view on what AI-native products mean for design, including how a product should show up to an agent.
  • Comfort near code: ability to read it, prototype with it, and collaborate with engineers without a translation layer.
  • Judgment to define quality where no established playbook exists, and the rigor to hold that bar.
  • Clear, direct communication and cross-org influence to make the case for AX to technical and non-technical partners and align product, engineering, and leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or shipping a CLI, SDK, API, or MCP surface used at scale.
  • Experience designing agent-facing documentation, Blueprints, Skills, or other material intended to teach a model how to operate a system.
  • Familiarity with OAuth, scoped tokens, or least-privilege access models.
  • Hands-on experience building with coding agents or LLM-driven tooling.
  • Design-engineering literacy: motion, prototyping, or front-end fluency.
  • Experience evolving a developer-first product toward larger teams and enterprises without losing the original audience.
  • Writing, talks, or side projects that show craft and point of view on developer experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design the full programmatic interface, including the CLI, API, MCP, SDKs, Blueprints, and Skills, ensuring they feel like one coherent product with a unified interaction model and error language.
  • Design documentation as an agent-facing product, creating Blueprints, Skills, and reference material that teach agents how to use Render correctly.
  • Close the human-operated gap in onboarding by designing a configuration-first path where the whole system is described in code (Blueprints) and deployed in one motion.
  • Design the dashboard surfaces where agent work becomes visible to humans, including review, supervision, and activity surfaces for agent-driven work.
  • Design agent authentication and access, including consent, scoping, and token management, to ensure least-privilege access is legible and safe.
  • Design one core model for platform objects (applications, services, environments) and ensure it is expressed consistently across all surfaces.
  • Surface agent-operable paths at moments of developer intent, such as copy-a-prompt CTAs or post-signup CLI install suggestions.
