About The Position

1-800-GOT-JUNK?, the #1 name in junk removal, is looking for a Staff Platform Engineer to join our growing technology team in Kansas City. You’ll design and build the foundational services, tooling, and infrastructure that our product engineering teams depend on every day - and you’ll help shape these next generation capabilities as we invest in AI-augmented software development workflows. This role sits at the center of how the company builds software. You’ll own cross-cutting platform concerns - APIs, developer tooling, CI/CD, observability, and service integrations - while also leading our early exploration of agentic engineering patterns: AI agents that can autonomously write, test, and deliver code with human oversight. We’re looking for a strong platform engineer with the curiosity and adaptability to learn fast in a rapidly evolving space. You’ll write code, build integrations, design systems, and work closely with engineers across the organization to make them more effective. You’ll also be expected to bring technical opinions, challenge assumptions, and help us make smart build-vs-buy decisions.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional experience in Software Engineering or DevOps, with a track record of designing and delivering systems that other teams depend on.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines and build automation (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar), with a focus on developer productivity and reliability.
  • Strong understanding of Node.js and TypeScript development tooling (Vite, NPM, etc)
  • Production experience with AWS cloud services and containerized deployments (Docker, ECS/EKS).
  • Strong proficiency with observability and performance monitoring tools, particularly Datadog or similar platforms.
  • Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and integrating systems across service boundaries.
  • Strong understanding of Git workflows and version control best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across distributed systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills - you can explain technical decisions to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A bias toward ownership, pragmatism, and getting things done - you don’t wait for perfect requirements to start making progress.
  • Genuine curiosity about AI-assisted software development and a willingness to learn and experiment with emerging tools and frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • Significant development experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Experience with AI/ML application development — prompt engineering, LLM orchestration, agent frameworks (LangChain, CrewAI, etc.), or RAG architectures.
  • Familiarity with the Model Context Protocol (MCP) ecosystem or AI-native development environments like Cursor.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code platforms (Terraform, Spacelift) and cloud governance practices.
  • Significant experience with PostgreSQL and designing databases that support high-traffic, production applications.
  • Background in platform engineering, developer experience, or internal tools teams — building capabilities that other engineers consume.
  • Experience with complex, multi-stage CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
  • Familiarity with application security concepts and frameworks (e.g., OWASP Top 10).

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain platform services that other engineering teams consume, such as APIs, shared libraries, internal tools, and integration patterns across our service ecosystem.
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), automating build, test, and deployment workflows to improve velocity and reliability across the organization.
  • Build and iterate on developer tooling that reduces friction and provides consistent, repeatable outcomes for product teams.
  • Explore and prototype agentic software development workflows; AI agents that interact with codebases, ticketing systems, and communication tools to accelerate engineering work.
  • Design integration patterns across Jira, Slack, GitHub, and Confluence that support both human and automated workflows.
  • Implement observability and monitoring using Datadog to track application and platform health, troubleshoot issues, and inform capacity decisions.
  • Contribute to infrastructure-as-code practices (Terraform, Spacelift) and collaborate with the Cloud Platform team on provisioning, governance, and cost management.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and event-driven integration patterns to support communication between internal systems and external partners.
  • Write clear, practical documentation that promotes knowledge-sharing and helps engineers adopt platform capabilities independently.
  • Mentor engineers across the organization on platform best practices, effective use of developer tools, and emerging engineering patterns.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to the technical direction of the Product & Technology organization.
