Staff Platform Engineer

Charlie Health•New York, NY
•$185,000 - $265,000•Hybrid

About The Position

As a Staff Platform Engineer on Charlie Health’s Core Platform team, you will build the patterns, services, and guardrails that help the company’s engineering teams work faster, more safely, and more consistently. The team focuses on platform capabilities rather than product features. You will own Core Services and one pillar of the AI-Native SDLC initiative: quality gates and test foundations, safe automated delivery, or AI-assisted development. You will take your area from design through production operation, establishing the paved roads other teams rely on. As a domain owner and technical lead, you will make technical decisions that hold up across team boundaries and work alongside experienced engineers who own platform primitives. Charlie Health uses AI as a default in software development: plans guide implementation, agents draft much of the code, and platform quality gates help make delivery safe in a HIPAA-regulated clinical business. The role includes production operations, on-call participation, reliability and security stewardship, and technical coaching. The position requires living within a 75-minute commute of the NYC office near Union Square and working in-office four days per week. The stated target base compensation is $185,000–$265,000 per year at the commencement of employment. Compensation is determined individually based on factors including location, experience, expertise, and internal pay equity; the package may also include stock options and other company-sponsored benefits. Comprehensive benefits are offered to full-time, exempt employees.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including several years designing and operating distributed systems or platform components used by other teams.
  • Depth in at least one of the following: test automation at scale, enabling AI code review at scale, or authorization systems using ReBAC and RBAC models such as Auth0 FGA, Zanzibar, OpenFGA, Cedar, or similar.
  • Experience with skills, MCPs, harnesses, agentic tooling ecosystems, or agent orchestration for software development.
  • Use AI agents as part of daily work, including writing plans agents can implement, using agents for real delivery, and identifying where agent output requires human judgment.
  • Experience with data modeling for systems of record, including safe schema changes against live production data.
  • Proficiency with Python and/or TypeScript services, Postgres, and AWS.
  • Track record of driving workstreams spanning multiple engineers and quarters without formal people authority.
  • Comfort operating production-critical systems, including on-call, in a regulated environment.
  • Clear, direct communication with engineers, product partners, and leadership.
  • Live within a 75-minute commute of the NYC office near Union Square and be able to work in-office four days per week.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with progressive delivery tooling such as feature flags and canary deployments, and end-to-end frameworks such as Playwright at scale.
  • Healthcare data standards experience, including FHIR or HL7v2, and engineering in a HIPAA-regulated environment.
  • Experience leading an incremental monolith-to-services migration.
  • Experience on a platform or developer experience team.
  • Fluency with domain-driven design or event storming.

Responsibilities

  • Own one or more platform or SDLC primitives end to end, from architecture and build through production operation and long-term evolution.
  • Build deterministic quality gates that enable safe delivery of agent-written code, including automated end-to-end testing, golden test datasets, and schema-change safety.
  • Roll out AI code review safely and contribute to the organization’s best-practices guide for AI-assisted development.
  • Deliver core services on the team’s paved roads and identify problems before product squads encounter them.
  • Mature platform authentication and authorization standards, including scoped, short-lived, audited credentials for non-human agent identities.
  • Write implementation plans that specify invariants, error cases, security implications, and acceptance criteria, and orchestrate agents across complex multi-PR work.
  • Coach Senior engineers and product squad engineers on agentic engineering best practices and platform patterns.
  • Define reliability conventions for the owned area, including SLOs, observability standards, and incident response practices; participate in the on-call rotation.
  • Steward the security and compliance posture of the owned platform primitive and monitor its operating costs.
  • Document domain standards as architecture decision records and bring them through the Architecture Advice Guild.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits for full-time, exempt employees.
  • The compensation package may include stock options and other Charlie Health-sponsored benefits.
