About The Position

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking a Staff Physician to perform medical evaluations of potential Correction Officer candidates. The role involves examining candidates, utilizing medical equipment and tests to assess their medical qualifications, and determining their fitness for duty. The physician will review all testing, medical documentation from private physicians, and lab results to make these determinations. The position also requires answering questions from candidates and staff. The DOC is committed to public safety and provides tools and opportunities for individuals in custody to re-enter their communities. The department operates facilities across five boroughs with a diverse team of professionals.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York.
• Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
• One year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area (to be assigned to Assignment Level II).
• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York (for Assignment Level III).
• A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics (for Assignment Level III).
• Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for the Master's degree (for Assignment Level III).
• At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology (for Assignment Level III).
• Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of experience (for Assignment Level III).
• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York (for Assignment Level IV).
• Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (for Assignment Level IV).
• Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty (for Assignment Level IV).
• Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (for Assignment Level IV).

Responsibilities

• Perform medical evaluations of potential Correction Officer candidates.
• Examine candidates utilizing appropriate medical equipment or tests.
• Evaluate medical qualifications of individuals.
• Make determinations on whether candidates are medically fit to perform the duties of the position of Correction Officer.
• Perform a Medical Examination of the candidates.
• Review all testing done at AIU.
• Review candidates’ medical documentation from private physicians and all labs or Clearances requested.
• Answer any questions from candidates, or our Nursing & Support Staff.
