About The Position

This position is located at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, MI. In addition to the clinical practice of medical care, the physician performs other duties which includes quality assurance, performance improvement, oversight of technical quality, education of staff and trainees, tumor board, and other multidisciplinary conferences, committee assignments, and other activities that support clinical operations, mission, values, and goals of the Detroit VA Medical Center. The position involves inpatient and outpatient infectious disease care. The candidate will have educational responsibilities for Infectious Disease fellows, Internal Medicine residents and medical students. Applicants must possess a full and unrestricted license in any state and must qualify for an academic appointment at Wayne State University. Applicants must be board certified. Infectious Disease board is desirable.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Subject to background/security investigation.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical evaluation.
  • Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.); light carrying (15 lbs. and under); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); kneeling (up to 1 hour); ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability; mental stability; working closely with others; and working alone.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

Responsibilities

  • Provide medical care for patients on the Infectious Diseases Service in cooperation with mid-level providers and other ID staff.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and provide consultation to patients of all ages with infectious diseases.
  • Assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative call services. This will include off tour (on call) duties.
  • Provide assistance to the Infectious Disease Section Chief with regard to other duties that may be requested. These may include, but are not limited to, assisting in data assimilation for VA reports, per review activities, quality improvement programs (QI), outpatient antibiotics (OPAT), Infection Control (IC), Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASP), or others as determined by the Infectious Diseases Section Chief.
  • Take an active role in the education and training of Medical Students, Residents, and ID Fellows. This will include formal lectures and clinic and bedside teaching and will be responsible for appropriate completion of medical records, notes, etc., done by those being supervised.
  • Be an active participant in the research activities of the ID section.
  • Reviews, examines, selects diagnostic testing appropriately, and interprets/ collates results to coordinate patient care.
  • Communicates and documents with clarity to patients and medical personnel to coordinate patient care.
  • Timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) is necessary in all areas in accordance with facility policy.
  • Complete all administrative work in a timely fashion.
  • Clinical practice, supervising and teaching fellows, residents and medical students in the specialties of Infectious Disease/ Internal Medicine.
  • Participation in appropriate subspecialty committees as needed by the facility including but not limited to Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT), Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), and Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP).
  • Assist in meeting goals for outpatient clinic including telehealth with VVC appointments and face to face. This includes meeting facility goals for minimum days required to see new patient and maintaining facility expectations for outpatient workload and bookable hours.
  • Work closely with clinical pharmacist.
  • Share attending call responsibilities with other Infectious Disease/Internal Medicine specialists in covering some nights, weekend and holiday calls as needed.
  • Round with the team of fellow(s), resident(s), and medical student(s) as regards to inpatient settings.
  • Lead and manage the Infectious Disease/Internal Medicine team consisting of fellows, residents, medical students, Pharmacists, Mid-Level Providers, etc. while on inpatient service or in clinical setting.
  • Administrative activities, including performance improvement activities, research, and non-clinical tasks as assigned.
  • Exhibit leadership in initializing changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and studies.
  • Stay informed on developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervising physician or his/her designee as it relates to scope of practice.
