About The Position

Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a self-motivated, driven, creative, and committed Staff Photographer to produce high-quality content. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working in a fast-paced environment with a strong emphasis on visual storytelling. This role requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team, immersing oneself in the shipyard's industrial environment, understanding operations, and collaborating with shipbuilders in office, studio, and waterfront settings. The candidate must be a fast learner with outstanding attention to detail and the confidence to make quick decisions in a constantly changing industrial setting.

Requirements

  • Proficient technical camera skills with the ability to take photographs in manual mode on professional grade DSLR cameras.
  • Extensive experience taking photos in outdoor and indoor environments with on-camera and off-camera lighting equipment.
  • Portrait skills including lighting setup and coaching individuals through a portrait session.
  • Proficient editing skills in Adobe Creative Suite – specifically Lightroom and Photoshop, without AI assistance.
  • Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Associate Degree and 1 year of relevant experience.
  • OR NNS Apprentice School graduate.
  • OR Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate.
  • OR High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience.
  • OR High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience.

Nice To Haves

  • FAA-Certified Drone Pilot license to fly a drone at NNS and surrounding areas to capture photo/video content for the company.
  • Experience with video creation, editing and production.
  • Experience in additional Adobe Creative Suite programs such as InDesign, Premiere etc.
  • Printing skills to include setting up files to print on large format printers as well as handling large prints.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for using a variety of cameras to capture content of company products, facilities, employees, and guests for internal and public communication channels.
  • Edits, delivers, and archives imagery without the use of artificial intelligence.
  • Obtains specific information about captured content and develops detailed captions to ensure accuracy.
  • Delivers products in the proper file size and type, often with quick turnaround times.
  • Photographs studio headshots using professional studio lighting equipment.
  • Photographs environmental portraits with a variety of off-camera lighting equipment.
  • Prints photographs on large format printers as required.
  • Photographs products, persons, buildings, machinery, equipment, parts, and other subjects for promotion, marketing, publicity, manufacturing, engineering, or administrative needs.
  • Arranges equipment such as lighting, screens, and shades.
  • Sets camera for correct angle, distance, light, and timing.
  • Enlarges, reduces, and intensifies prints.
  • Uses a variety of still cameras and related equipment.
  • Conducts extensive site surveys, logistics planning, and physical work including lifting and climbing in an industrial setting.
  • Documents work on ships in the shipyard and at sea, and from elevated locations.
  • Participates in the company’s emergency response organization.
  • Works outside of first shift hours, including weekends, as assignments dictate, including support of various special events.
