About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care - Presurgical Evaluation Clinic is seeking a 50% Staff Nurse to join their team. This role involves applying nursing theory to patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation. The nurse will educate patients preparing for tests and procedures, review medications, and coordinate care across different settings. Responsibilities include developing and implementing patient care plans, documenting interventions, and collaborating with patients, families, and the healthcare team to ensure patient needs are met. The role also involves managing clinic schedules, coordinating appointments, reviewing medical records and previous testing, and responding to electronic communications. The nurse will participate in team huddles to discuss priorities and assignments, and track recurring issues to identify workflow improvements. This position is part of the University of Iowa Health Care, recognized as a leading academic medical center.

Requirements

An Associate's Degree, a diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
General computer skills are required.

Responsibilities

Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
Provide education to patients preparing for tests, pre-operative information, and reviewing medications.
Collaboratively coordinates the continuum of care across settings.
Assist with coordinating clinic and radiology appointments at UI Health Care and locally as appropriate.
Develops patient care plan based on patient condition, age, and psychological, educational, and socioeconomic conditions that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
Implements patient care plan according to patient priorities, which includes interventions identified through nursing diagnoses.
Documents/reports interventions and patient/family response.
Collaborates and integrates contributions of patients and families into multidisciplinary patient care plan.
Work with the patient and family to ensure patient needs are met following procedures/surgeries.
Implements nursing interventions according to department, division, and/or unit policies, procedures, and protocols to maintain safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
Follows universal precautions.
Review the patient’s medical record(s) to provide accurate information related to their concern and reason for seeing the physician.
Review previous testing done and obtain records and images related to clinic visit.
Monitor and respond to emails and Epic inbox messages from providers in a timely manner.
Coordinate with front desk staff when a provider is absent to ensure patient coverage and reassignment plans are established by 10:00 a.m.
Review the upcoming PEC schedule at least 48 hours in advance to ensure appropriate medical records have been requested, patients are scheduled appropriately, surgeon notes are reviewed, and schedules are balanced.
Maintain and proactively manage a follow-up list with the goal of obtaining needed records and completing follow-up activities at least 48 hours in advance.
Review follow-up needs each morning and communicate outstanding items to the designated MA for the day.
Participate in an 8:00 a.m. team huddle to review priorities, follow-up needs, and daily assignments.
Track recurring questions and requests received through provider pages to identify opportunities for improved workflows, education, and communication.
Collaborate with nursing leadership to identify trends and develop resources or process improvements based on recurring needs.
