About The Position
The Department of Pathology is seeking a Staff Nurse to provide specialized care to blood donors and patients in a highly regulated environment. This role involves performing numerous steps and techniques that require professional judgment, operating cell separators and other equipment while caring for donors undergoing apheresis procedures, and supervising designated laboratory staff as directed. The position is 50 or 100% time, with a choice of 8- or 10-hour shifts. The hours are primarily Monday – Friday with approximately three to six weekend shifts a year, scheduled between 0700 and 1930. The Department of Pathology is part of UI Health Care, a comprehensive health sciences center serving Iowa and the region, with Clinical Laboratories recognized for outstanding and comprehensive patient care. The department also participates in educational programs for medical students, clinical laboratory scientists, and biomedical scientists.
Requirements
- An Associate’s Degree in Nursing, a Diploma in Nursing, a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Professional Masters of Nursing and Healthcare Practice (MNHP), MSN/Clinical Nurse Leader or a Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN, MA) is required.
- Current license to practice professional nursing in Iowa.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with blood donors, patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions.
- General computer skills are required.
- Proven capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task.
Nice To Haves
- 1-3 years acute care nursing experience.
- Previous experience using electronic medical records.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Experience working in a blood donor or apheresis center.
- Experience using highly specialized medical equipment.
Responsibilities
- Screens prospective whole blood and apheresis donors and performs physical examination of the donor using standard interview forms and/or donor computer software.
- Obtains donor samples for determination of laboratory values. Draws pretest, retest and other blood samples as assigned.
- Performs phlebotomy, drawing whole blood units.
- May participate in off-site blood collection.
- Performs record keeping and data collection using manual and computer methods.
- Supervise designated laboratory staff as directed.
