About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 100% Hybrid/Remote Phone Triage Staff Nurse for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. This role is approved for hybrid or remote work after completing orientation. Occasional on-site presence may be required for education, training, and orientation. The primary responsibility is to handle live calls from Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center clinic patients, providing over-the-phone assessment and triage through active listening and questioning. The role involves assessing patients' nursing care needs, evaluating care effectiveness, and integrating nursing theory and research into practice. Additionally, it requires providing leadership to the nursing team to maintain patient care standards.

Requirements

  • Current license to practice in the state of Iowa by the time of hire
  • Oncology experience in the last 10 years
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with patients/families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members as demonstrated through written and verbal interactions
  • General Computer skills

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical nursing experience, preferably with ambulatory experience
  • Prior experience with nurse triage or in a call center setting.
  • Previous experience with EPIC.

Responsibilities

  • Answers telephones, prioritizes clinical triage calls, follows clinical protocols, and coordinates services for patients.
  • Verifies patient demographic information and accurately documents phone encounters in the electronic health record.
  • Provides phone-based support for oncology patients managing treatment side effects, pain, medication concerns, and emotional distress.
  • Collaborates with oncology physicians, nurse practitioners, and care teams to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Serves as an escalation point for clinical patient issues and provides clinical advice based on protocols and procedures.
  • Manages and responds to escalated electronic patient messages when not answering inbound calls, using clinical judgment to prioritize.
  • Creates a positive patient experience by resolving issues or concerns during the phone call within the scope of the role.
  • Assists with scheduling appointments or referring patients to outside agencies for care.
  • Incorporates scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles into clinical practice.
  • Utilizes, adheres to, and supports departmental standards and practice guidelines.
  • Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness.
  • Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations.
  • Maintains skills and competency related to special equipment, medications, and procedures common to the patient population.
  • Uses evaluation data to revise and implement change.
  • Assumes accountability for the provision of care for patients.
  • Participates as a member of the health care team utilizing effective communication skills.
  • Participates in the development of unit, division, department, and hospital policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of computer applications.
  • Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and the ongoing education of nursing personnel.
  • Participates in formal and informal teaching with health care students.
  • Functions as a patient advocate.
  • Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure positive patient/customer relations.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Practices within legal boundaries of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Evaluates and validates performance with Nurse Manager or designee and sets goals for work performance.
  • Adheres to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, including following established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction and coaching from supervisors, and meeting standards of personal appearance, attendance, and punctuality.
