The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse in the Day of Surgery Admissions RN Phone Caller to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. This role incorporates scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice, utilizing and supporting departmental standards and practice guidelines. The nurse applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness, assessing patient health care preferences and expectations. The position involves collaborating to coordinate the continuum of care across settings, developing patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and socioeconomic factors, and implementing these plans. Documentation of interventions and patient responses, collaboration with families, and discharge planning are key aspects. The role also includes implementing nursing interventions according to policies, maintaining a safe environment, following universal precautions, implementing emergency care procedures, and maintaining skills related to special equipment, medications, and procedures. Evaluation of patient response to care, accountability for patient care, and evaluation of care provided by other staff members are also included. Participation as a member of the health care team, contributing to policy development, staffing solutions, cost containment, and unit projects are expected. The nurse will develop and implement patient/family teaching plans, evaluate their effectiveness, and participate in the orientation and education of new staff and students. Research utilization, quality improvement activities, and functioning as a patient advocate are integral to the role. Adherence to Service Leadership principles, maintaining confidentiality, practicing within legal boundaries, complying with personnel policies, and committing to ongoing learning and professional development are essential. The nurse will demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills, remain calm in conflict situations, and provide support to colleagues. Adherence to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, leadership responsiveness, and standards of appearance, attendance, and punctuality is required.
