The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Staff Nurse in the Day of Surgery Admissions RN Phone Caller to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager. This role incorporates scientific, behavioral, and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice. The nurse will utilize, adhere, and support departmental standards and practice guidelines, and apply nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness. Key responsibilities include assessing patient health care preferences and expectations, collaboratively coordinating the continuum of care across settings, and developing patient care plans based on patient condition, age, and psychosocial factors. The nurse will implement patient care plans, document interventions and patient responses, and collaborate with families into multidisciplinary care plans. Developing, coordinating, and implementing transfer/discharge planning throughout the episode of care is also a core function. The position requires adherence to universal precautions, implementation of emergency care procedures, and maintenance of skills related to special equipment, medications, and procedures. The nurse will evaluate patient responses to care, use evaluation data to revise plans, and assume accountability for patient care. This role involves evaluating the quality of nursing care provided by other staff members, participating as a member of the health care team with effective communication, and contributing to the development of unit, division, department, and hospital policies and protocols. The nurse will also contribute to solutions for staffing issues and cost containment strategies, and participate in projects/committees for enhanced unit functioning and decision-making. Developing and implementing an interdisciplinary plan of care, participating in strategic planning, and contributing to the development and implementation of computer applications are also part of the role. Additionally, the nurse will develop and implement patient/family teaching plans, evaluate and document their effectiveness, and revise plans of care accordingly. Participation in the orientation of new nursing staff, ongoing education of nursing personnel, and formal/informal teaching with health care students, including serving as a clinical teaching assistant for senior level nursing students, is expected. The role also involves participating in research utilization activities, integrating research findings into practice, and applying quality improvement principles to improve patient outcomes. The nurse will function as a patient advocate, incorporate Service Leadership principles for positive patient relations, maintain confidentiality, and practice within legal boundaries. Performance evaluation and goal setting with the Nurse Manager, commitment to ongoing learning, and participation in professional development activities are required. Demonstrating effective interpersonal and communication skills, remaining calm in conflict situations, and providing recognition and support for colleagues are essential. Adherence to UI Health Care policies regarding personal conduct, leadership, responsiveness to instruction, and meeting standards of personal appearance, attendance, and punctuality is mandatory.
