About The Position

The RN Staff Nurse Outpatient is a clinically competent registered professional nurse who prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care for acutely ill patients through assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse interacts effectively with patients, significant others, and members of the health team while maintaining professional nursing standards. The role uses critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and relationship-building skills to improve team effectiveness, care processes, and patient outcomes across the continuum of care. The position reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values and complies with its ethics, compliance, policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Nursing required for all new hires after 01/01/2011.
Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
One year of experience in a similar role.
Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is not required in outpatient oncology departments.

Responsibilities

Collect and analyze data, identify expected outcomes, develop and implement individualized plans of care, coordinate care delivery, and evaluate progress.
Direct care and determine the appropriate utilization of assistants involved in direct patient care.
Involve patients and families in care, including teaching, continuity-of-care, and discharge planning.
Provide patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or healthcare errors, incorporating National Patient Safety Goals.
Assess and reassess pain, use appropriate pain-management techniques, and educate patients and families about pain management.
Provide effective hand-offs to the next healthcare provider.
Assume required on-call assignments.
