Staff Metrology Engineer

Wolfspeed•Marcy, NY
•$81,000 - $111,000

About The Position

This role focuses on improving production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques, and production yields for existing products through equipment and process modifications. The engineer will be involved in routine data analysis, statistical process control, and collaborating with various departments to drive problem-solving and learning. Responsibilities include developing statistical analyses, ensuring compatibility between processes and designs, performing measurement system analyses, documenting and resolving process/equipment issues, handling material dispositions, assisting in procedure creation, and working towards yield and cycle time goals. The role also involves training junior engineers and technicians.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, or related STEM field
  • 5+ years of metrology engineering experience in a high-volume semiconductor FAB
  • Hands-on experience with specific metrology tools (CD-SEM, spectroscopic ellipsometry, XRF, XRD, SIMS, AFM, optical CD, capacitance-voltage (CV), hall measurements)
  • Proficiency with SPC software and statistical methods (DOE, Gage R&R, MSA)

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant STEM discipline
  • Experience with SiC (silicon carbide) or other wide bandgap semiconductor processes
  • Familiarity with specific metrology platforms (e.g., CD-SEM, ellipsometry, XRF, AFM, optical profilometry, overlay metrology)
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as JMP, Minitab, Python, or R
  • Prior experience mentoring or leading junior engineers

Responsibilities

  • Recommends and implements equipment and process modifications to improve production efficiencies, manufacturing techniques and production yields for existing products.
  • Routine data analysis and Statistical Process Chart (SPC) review to identify trends and shifts.
  • Develops and conducts statistical analysis such as Design of Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) targeting physical cause of failure for yield loss and improving quality.
  • Interacts with product design and development personnel to ensure that processes and designs are compatible.
  • Perform Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gage R&R, and tool to tool matching on a wide range of semiconductor measurement systems.
  • Report and document process issues and equipment malfunctions. Take corrective action and interact with Process Engineers & Equipment Maintenance to identify and resolve non-conformance process and equipment operations.
  • Handle material dispositions and work to resolve any lot issues that may arise.
  • Assist in creating new procedures and refining existing ones.
  • Work collaboratively to achieve quarterly set yield and cycle time goals.
  • Work with and train junior engineers and process technicians.
