About The Position

Axcelis is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the design and development of highly mechanized and automated capital equipment for the semiconductor industry. Working closely with product and marketing managers, the engineer develops solutions to engineering challenges involving ion implanters. Projects may include new product development, continuous improvement, part obsolescence, and field-identified issues. The engineer champions sound engineering methods, analysis tools, design for excellence (DfX), and concurrent product development processes to deliver effective solutions. In addition to owning projects, the role guides less experienced engineers through coaching and delegation. The position manages the mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products, with close day-to-day interaction with project managers and key customers. It requires collaboration with design services, offshore teams, and cross-functional groups to deliver quality designs on schedule and within budget. The engineer ensures mechanical designs meet design objectives, customer requirements, safety standards, and applicable industry requirements, including SEMI. The role also involves design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies, and troubleshooting system-level problems that cross engineering disciplines.

  • At least 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering.
  • Practical experience designing, manufacturing, and servicing highly automated electromechanical systems.
  • Strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Solid technical background to understand, communicate, and make decisions that improve the overall product and mechanical architecture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience with a PLM system.
  • Ability to contribute to technical design and carry out hands-on engineering work.

Nice To Haves

  • Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) preferred.
  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment.
  • Experience working with offshore teams.
  • Capital equipment design experience.
  • Knowledge of controls and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of PTC/Windchill.
  • 3D modeling and FEA analysis skills.
  • Knowledge of PTC/Creo and Ansys.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new and innovative solutions for existing and future ion implanters.
  • Ensure adherence to the development process, including requirements planning, schedule estimates, concept reviews, design reviews, and verification and validation test plans.
  • Monitor project progress, coordinate with program and project engineers, review reports, and recommend corrective actions to keep development on schedule and within budget guidelines.
  • Manage the mechanical engineering interface with the design services group and offshore teams to deliver quality designs and on-time performance.
  • Communicate development project status to customers and cross-functional groups.
  • Ensure products and projects meet customer requirements and specifications.
  • Hold mechanical engineers accountable for quality goals, schedules, development processes, and system performance.
  • Manage the complete mechanical engineering lifecycle for new and legacy products in coordination with project managers and key customers.
  • Ensure mechanical designs meet design objectives and safety, SEMI industry, and customer-specific requirements.
  • Execute design, qualification, and release of mechanical assemblies.
  • Troubleshoot system-level problems spanning multiple engineering disciplines, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Guide less experienced engineers through coaching and delegation.

Benefits
