About The Position

The Staff Mechanical Engineer demonstrates a thorough understanding of a focused and highly disciplined approach to engineering project work and independently solves complex problems associated with the design, development and manufacturing of products. This role will assume leadership of Mechanical Engineering activities on projects and will serve as the group expert for Mechanical Engineering design and sourcing. A successful candidate must also effectively communicate in cross functional teams that span all engineering disciplines, marketing, sales, and production.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or similar; if a Master’s Degree in Engineering, Physics or similar is held, substitutions may be made for the Bachelor’s degree
  • 8+ years of product development mechanical engineering experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience and advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software
  • Proven success modeling with COMSOL or similar FEA modeling software
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience applying: mechanical engineering fundamentals; testing and validation procedures and the scientific method; discrete manufacturing methods

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree or Ph.D. or equivalent in Engineering, Physics or similar
  • Experience in a research environment, conducting self-driven experiments and investigation OR Product or research and development experience on a project from the concept phase through the prototyping and launch phase with leadership over the mechanical activities
  • Experience leading and mentoring other engineers, serving as a subject matter expert
  • Rapid prototyping techniques
  • Experience in product verification and validation testing for mechanical components and systems
  • Experience in developing verification and validation test plans
  • Pro/E Creo Experience
  • COMSOL Experience
  • Optics and Optical System Modeling experience, such as with Zemax
  • Knowledge of and experience with: additive manufacturing methods and processes; standardized engineering methods: FMEA, DOE, Sensitivity Analysis; fluid mechanics; heat transfer; aerosol measurement; programming: VBA for Excel, Python, C++/C#

Responsibilities

  • Independently design and develop the mechanical portions of electronic instruments, and integrate solutions with the electrical and optical design
  • Model physical systems for heating/cooling, fluid flow, aerosol movement, and optics properties, using finite-element analysis software and related technologies
  • Design and support injection molded designs, machined parts design, and rapid prototyping techniques, especially 3D printing
  • Understand design, performance, and cost tradeoffs and make recommendations for optimization
  • Support rapid cycles of design/test/model/experiment/analyze that are complex in nature
  • Evaluate potential solutions to engineering problems for feasibility, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness
  • Accurately estimate task duration and resource requirements to meet project commitments
  • Design parts in Creo and SolidWorks
  • Support product design, by testing sub-systems and products in a lab (functional testing, drop test, vibration test, etc.)
  • Conduct experiments and system-level measurements for gases and aerosols, and verify and validate such systems
  • May serve as a technical lead on research and development projects and provide guidance to other engineers or technicians
  • Responsible for providing strong documentation and specifications on project work
  • Other duties, as assigned
