About The Position

Proterra Powered LLC is seeking a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to provide design-focused support and technical issue resolution for our battery module and pack. This role involves executing design solutions for new battery module and pack platforms, releasing drawings, supporting engineering validation of new designs and proposed changes, and supporting change management functions. The engineer will have full subsystem and component design responsibility, from concept through production launch and ramp. Responsibilities include developing and optimizing the design of complex parts and assemblies using 3D CAD software and associated CAE tools, delivering design specifications (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing) to defined schedules through meticulous release of 2D part/assembly drawings, and working cross-functionally to define validation test plans and supporting documentation (test plans and DFMEA). The role also involves developing new technologies, improving existing products, collaborating with the broader engineering team to provide DFA/DFM feedback, assisting in the development of significant design specifications, FMEAs, DOEs, and verification and validation protocols, and participating in sourcing and growing engineering relationships with suppliers to facilitate design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback and tool development. A specialty in thermal systems is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Eight (8) years of experience as a (all levels) Design Engineer or related occupation.
  • 5 years in automotive thermal systems.
  • 1 year in Battery, EV powertrain, or high voltage systems.
  • Design engineering in the automotive or transportation industries.
  • Designing and analyzing high voltage/current joints (welded, bolted, etc.).
  • Dispensed materials such as powder coating, and thermal interface.
  • Contribution to at least 3 full product development cycles; design, development, test, manufacturing, and assembly operations.
  • Prototype builds and DOEs for performance evaluation and hardware test and validation for electromechanical systems.
  • 3D CAD design and 2D drafting (including GD&T) of mechanical components.
  • Designing for multiple forms of high-volume manufacturing methods, including die casting, extrusion, injection/ compression molding, welding, stamping, etc.
