As a Staff Engineer- Manufacturing Engineering – Dimensional, you will be responsible for creating geometric dimensions and tolerances, analyzing them using design variation analysis tools, providing feedback, and setting GD&T and tolerancing requirements for product design. This role is a key technical leadership position for developing the dimensional strategy for Rivian’s new products. Responsibilities include helping to develop the assembly process for Body Structure, Drive Unit, and General Assembly, working cross-functionally with Manufacturing Engineers, Design Release Engineers, and Supplier Development Engineers to ensure successful product launches at facilities in Normal, IL and East Atlanta, GA. The role also involves overseeing Design Validation Builds in the metro Detroit area. This position is located at the Normal, IL facility and reports directly to a Sr. Manager, Manufacturing Engineering.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of an automotive design and development process, system requirements, and general engineering best practices
  • Understanding of various methods of component forming and assembly and associated part or assembly tolerances
  • Experience with component specification standards and ANSI standards for GD&T
  • Ability to review a design and process and provide suggestions to improve the repeatability of design
  • Experience with fixture design and the ability to troubleshoot fixture method repeatability issues.
  • Understanding and implementation of part quality improvements.
  • BS or higher in engineering.
  • 7+ years’ experience
  • CAD & GD&T proficiency
  • Expertise in both 1D and 3D tolerance stack analysis
  • Passion for problem solving with the ability to methodically root cause issues by following a first principles approach.
  • Ability to make data driven decisions and demonstrate good analytical skills
  • Proficiency with statistical qualification of machinery, equipment, and gages (MSA) and the ability to improve and document our methods for completing these tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of best dimensional practice for process, vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve dimensional accuracy
  • Contribute to new business initiatives and projects and review and communicate the impact on quality activities
  • Drive dimensional controls and tolerance discussions into the basics of all design across the organization
  • Support vehicle development and design team to ensure proper GD&T is specified for supplier parts and planned for in assembly of components
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis on systems and components in support of design, development, and advanced manufacturing
  • Iterate on component design with design and release engineers based on assembly process and dimensional layouts to ensure a repeatable vehicle build with proper part fits and panel adjustments
  • Create and then uphold Rivian checking fixture and part quality standards
  • Review part tolerance call outs for supplier components as released with RFQ packages to suppliers
  • Support component and system design simplification with an overall push for manufacturing and assembly in design
  • Follow-up with suppliers through all phases of fixture design and construction
  • Assure that all buyoff criteria is upheld for all parts/assemblies through final approval, to include but not limited to: Certification, R&R, EC Level, part quality.
  • Lead and mentor others in the Dimensional Control Engineering Department
  • Work as a champion of good, fundamental design across the vehicle
  • Work upfront in the design process to develop and assess feasibility of design targets for key vehicle sub-systems.
  • Cross-functional development and documentation of assembly datum schemes and in process dimensional specification requirements to ensure robust product manufacture.
  • Perform part and assembly tolerance stack analysis and provide feedback to product and manufacturing engineering team.
  • Development of key product maturation tools to be used in conjunction with quality loops to drive towards product excellence during new product introduction.
  • Root Cause launch issues in a data driven way.
  • Participate in Virtual and production Build events.
