Staff Harness Design Engineer - Power Systems

Lightship•Broomfield, CO
•$155,000 - $170,000

About The Position

Lightship is developing an aerodynamic, battery-powered recreational vehicle and is building expertise in advanced vehicle design and manufacturing. The Staff Design Engineer focused on wiring systems works with the power systems, vehicle, and controls engineering teams to ensure power and signals reach their intended destinations. The role collaborates across Product, Design, Engineering, and other teams on architectural decisions that support bringing an exceptional vehicle to market. The engineer owns vehicle wiring-harness design, maintains the vehicle wiring diagram, and manages high-voltage harness routing and design. The role also supports component packaging, mechanical analysis, reliability and safety assessment, component selection and sourcing, prototyping, and vehicle testing. In addition, the engineer provides technical mentorship and guidance to a growing team of mechanical engineers.

Requirements

  • B.S. or higher degree in an engineering field, preferably Mechanical Engineering.
  • 7+ years of mechanical or electrical engineering design experience, including direct experience specifying, designing, and validating wire harnesses.
  • Experience with CAD/PLM/PDM systems.
  • Experience with rapid iteration cycles.
  • Experience with general harness sizing and provisioning.
  • Experience creating 3D CAD and 2D drawings for harness routing.
  • Experience creating design validation plans for electrical hardware and mechanical assemblies.

Nice To Haves

  • EV/HV routing experience.
  • Boat, agriculture, or RV industry experience.
  • Experience in automotive or transportation industries, including truck, bus, or rail.
  • Siemens Capital.
  • Catia.
  • Harness prototyping.

Responsibilities

  • Own product design for vehicle wire harnesses, including signal wiring, solar, AC and DC appliance power, and wiring for vehicle sensors, components, and controllers.
  • Maintain the full vehicle wiring diagram with support from the power systems and vehicle engineering teams.
  • Manage high-voltage harness routing and design for the drive system, power distribution, and HVAC.
  • Own device transmittal documentation as the interface between device owners, controls, and the harnessing team.
  • Work with power systems and vehicle teams to package wire-harness components inside and outside the RV cabin.
  • Conduct detailed mechanical analysis of subsystems and components to ensure functional, durability, and longevity requirements are met.
  • Perform Design Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to establish reliability and mitigate safety issues for critical components and assemblies.
  • Select off-the-shelf components, including connectors, terminals, wire, loom, and shields, with a focus on cost, quality, and supply-chain robustness.
  • Work directly with vendors alongside supply chain for sourcing parts, components, and materials.
  • Support functional prototyping of subsystems to de-risk designs before full vehicle builds.
  • Work with test engineering to develop DVP&R testing and troubleshoot vehicle-level test failures.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to a growing team of mechanical engineers.

Benefits

  • Healthcare, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • 13 company holidays, including a week of scheduled company downtime at the end of the year.
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave.
