Staff Hardware Engineer (Fixed-Term Contract)

Google•Mountain View, CA
•$176,000 - $256,000

About The Position

As a Mechatronics Engineer on a one-year fixed-term contract, you will modify platforms, rapidly prototype, and experiment with new designs to inform robotics efforts. You will work in a cross-functional team with designers, AI researchers, and HRI scientists to develop experiential proof points. The role uses 3D design, rapid prototyping tools, actuators, mechanisms, motor controllers, and simulation to prototype, assemble, and bring up next-generation characterful robots. The job posting also describes Google's work on custom silicon for direct-to-consumer products and provides background on Android, Google's mobile operating system and platform for devices such as smartphones, tablets, TVs, and wearables.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 6 years of experience in rapid prototyping, physical assembly, and electromechanical testing.
  • Experience with structural and kinematic systems or CAD design for physical mechanisms.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as 3D printing, fabrication, and CNC, as well as custom electronics and motor controllers.
  • Experience working with actuators, motors, motor drivers, and software simulation.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience working with animatronics or characterful robots.
  • Experience working in Human Robot Interaction labs.
  • Experience with kitting, wire routing, and board integration in a fast-paced hardware lab environment.
  • Expertise in robotics mechanical design, including dynamic loads, shock and vibration isolation, and thermal management.
  • Proficiency in advanced CAD modeling, Finite Element Analysis, and rapid fabrication techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Lead documentation of hardware design, implementation, and test or validation results throughout the product life cycle.
  • Design and prototype new robot form factors with designers and AI researchers, using 3D design tools, fabrication methods such as 3D printing, motor controllers, and simulation.
  • Modify existing small robotic platforms, such as Open Duck Mini, Reachy Mini, and Microduck, to enhance expressivity and AI control, including upgrading servos and hardware components.
  • Design, integrate, and test electronic subsystems, including motor controllers and sensors, to support custom physical mechanisms.
