Staff Finance Systems Engineer - Order to Cash (San Francisco and Bay Area only)

CanvaSan Francisco, CA
$205,000 - $316,000Hybrid

About The Position

This is a domain systems engineering role focused on designing and building cross-functional capabilities within the Order to Cash (O2C) and revenue recognition processes. The role involves assessing systems like NetSuite, Zuora, Snowflake, Sales Systems, Revenue Platforms, and Finance Data to understand complexity and business priority. The individual will develop technical proposals, create resourcing and sequencing recommendations for leadership, and serve as the primary point of contact for other engineering teams working on revenue recognition or O2C. This position requires deep collaboration with Finance leadership, Revenue Platform Engineering, Finance Data Platform, Sales Systems, and Business Data Platform, and will represent Canva's technical position to vendors at a strategic level.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in finance systems engineering, with deep hands-on experience in Order to Cash and revenue recognition.
  • Public company / SOX environment experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ownership of a multi-system architecture decision, not just implementation of a defined solution, ideally spanning ERP, billing, and revenue recognition platforms.
  • A track record of being given a vague, high-stakes mandate and independently shaping it into a scoped, resourced technical roadmap that senior stakeholders acted on.
  • Comfort operating as the technical authority in a room of Finance and Engineering stakeholders where the recommendation itself, not just the implementation, is being challenged.
  • Working knowledge across adjacent systems (Sales Systems, Revenue Platforms, Finance Data, sales compensation, general ledger) sufficient to reason about cross-system impact without needing to be the domain expert in each.
  • Strong grounding in ASC 606/IFRS 15 and the ability to translate O2C and revenue recognition requirements into system architecture, not just configuration.
  • Proficiency in SQL and data tooling to investigate cross-system discrepancies at the architecture level.
  • Evidence of authoring standards or frameworks that other engineers or teams have adopted beyond your own immediate team.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to operate and be successful in high growth B2B and B2C environments.
  • Thrive on problem solving and dealing with ambiguity.
  • Willing to get your hands dirty when needed.
  • Be comfortable with chaos.
  • A track record of mentoring senior (B2/B3) engineers without formal reporting lines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfort holding a technical position under scrutiny from Finance leadership, and revising it credibly when the evidence warrants.
  • Proactive, independent to get work done and collaborative to bring people on the journey.

Responsibilities

  • Developing a strong understanding of Canva's end-to-end B2B & B2C Order to Cash process and the systems that support it, including NetSuite, Zuora, payment gateways, collections management, and downstream reporting.
  • Triaging all major changes to these systems or their integrations.
  • Owning system and process improvement projects across stakeholders including Revenue Platform Engineering, Finance Data Platform, Business Data Platform, Finance Revenue Operations, and external vendors.
  • Staying current with changes across the O2C system landscape and supporting the Finance team in assessing impacts on financial reporting and underlying business logic.
  • Maintaining/building working knowledge of adjacent systems, including sales compensation and general ledger integrations, to support cross-system change assessment and ensure data integrity across the Finance platform.
  • Assisting the Finance team in implementing system monitoring controls (SOX & ITGC) and audits to ensure data accuracy, compliance, and adherence to established policies and procedures.
  • Performing troubleshooting and technical root cause analysis in collaboration with stakeholders to deliver permanent solutions.
  • Continuously assessing system performance and identifying opportunities for improvement, implementing optimization strategies to enhance efficiency and user experience.
  • Collating and maintaining all relevant documentation throughout the process as required by advisors, auditors, and management.
  • Assessing every system that touches or is impacted by the revenue recognition goal to establish complexity and business priority.
  • Developing the technical proposal where no existing playbook applies.
  • Bringing a resourcing and sequencing recommendation to group leadership, not just a technical design.
  • Serving as the go-to person for other engineering teams when their work touches revenue recognition or O2C.
  • Representing Canva's technical position to vendors (Zuora/Netsuite/Workato) at a strategic level.
