Our products serve hundreds of thousands of freelancers, solo entrepreneurs and microbusinesses across hundreds of industries across multiple geographies. We are looking for an experienced and motivated Staff Engineer to lead the evolution of our backend systems and drive improvements to our core services. This role is critical in optimizing our existing stack and building a scalable, unified invoicing solution for both existing and new customers. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in developing and maintaining highly scalable Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA), microservices, database optimization and distributed systems while driving engineering excellence across teams.

  • 1-2 years of experience operating at a Staff Engineer level, leading architectural decisions and driving cross-team technical initiatives.
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience developing highly scalable backend microservices using Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Extensive expertise in database modeling, indexing, and performance tuning across both relational and document stores (PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
  • Deep understanding of caching strategies (Redis, Memcached) and message brokers (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, etc.) to handle asynchronous processing.
  • Proven track record of designing high-performance, scalable APIs (REST or GraphQL) that seamlessly support high-traffic mobile and web applications.
  • Strong command of cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines (CI/CD), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experienced in rapidly assessing legacy architectures and driving pragmatic optimizations that enhance both technical reliability and business KPIs.
  • Exceptional communication and technical writing skills, with the ability to document complex systems and collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Passionate about system observability, maintaining high code quality through rigorous automated testing, and fostering a culture of engineering excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and enhance backend microservices and event-driven architectures to support long-term scalability.
  • Drive cross-platform integrations within the EverPro ecosystem to enable a seamless and performant invoicing experience.
  • Optimize performance and reliability of core backend services through targeted refactoring, bottleneck analysis, and re-architecture.
  • Apply modern distributed systems principles to improve system observability, fault tolerance, and resilience.
  • Ensure high availability of backend services leveraging cloud-native architectures, containerization, and infrastructure-as-code best practices.
  • Implement robust tracing, logging, and security measures across all backend systems.
  • Optimize complex queries and schema designs across both NoSQL (MongoDB) and relational databases to ensure data integrity at scale.
  • Lead efforts to scale data storage and caching solutions, balancing system efficiency, latency, and cloud costs.
  • Evaluate and introduce messaging or queuing technologies to support asynchronous workflows.
  • Act as a technical pillar and mentor, setting backend best practices and driving engineering excellence across squads.
  • Author technical design documents (RFCs) and advocate for modern development patterns, enhancing code quality, security, and maintainability.
  • Champion automated testing, CI/CD enhancements, and rigorous code reviews.
  • Work closely with product, frontend, and engineering leadership to align underlying technical infrastructure with product goals.
  • Influence technical strategy and shape the roadmap by participating early in product discovery and architectural discussions.
  • Communicate complex technical trade-offs effectively to stakeholders, navigating ambiguity with a data-driven, proactive mindset.
