About The Position

This role involves determining project scope and specifications with substantial latitude for action or decision. The Staff Engineer recommends changes in procedures, design, or equipment where necessary. They initiate and maintain communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services, and provide technical assistance regarding complex product evaluation, inspection, and follow-up services. This position resolves technical issues and explains UL procedures and requirements. The Staff Engineer plans, conducts, and supervises projects of major magnitude and scope, identifying areas where products are not in compliance with UL requirements or where project scope or specifications have changed, and notifying the client accordingly. They coordinate complex laboratory activities by developing data sheets and managing administrative aspects of project management. This role may involve serving as Project Handler or Reviewer of record. Continuous improvement concepts and techniques are integrated into all aspects of the job. The Staff Engineer resolves complex engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of variations. They develop UL requirements for testing products beyond the scope of existing standards or those with unique features, requiring frequent use of independent judgment. Additionally, they develop special test methods and test equipment, and represent UL on technical committees of national and/or international organizations. This role provides leadership and technical advice on special projects involving complex, new, or unusual issues, and may provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories. Adherence to the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices is required. Special projects are performed as directed.
