Staff Engineer

PreVeil Inc•Remote (MA, US), MA
•$200,000 - $225,000

About The Position

The Staff Engineer will define the long-term technical direction, target architecture, and modernization strategy for PreVeil’s Windows and macOS clients and their integration with cloud services. The role sets direction for real-time synchronization, local-state management, and multi-device reliability, and serves as an escalation point for difficult production issues involving performance, scalability, connectivity, and reliability. The engineer will design and evolve secure protocols and interfaces across client and cloud components, shape enterprise identity architecture—including SSO, Okta, Active Directory, provisioning, and role-based access control—and lead the technical approach to semantic search across end-to-end encrypted email and files. They will establish engineering standards for client performance, diagnostics, testing, releases, and production reliability, identify systemic risks, and lead organization-wide solutions. This is a hands-on technical leadership role driving high-impact, multi-team initiatives from strategy through delivery and production operation. The Staff Engineer will partner on multi-quarter roadmaps, represent engineering in executive, customer, and partner conversations, mentor senior engineers into technical leads, and help recruit senior engineering talent. The role is based in Massachusetts for flexible hybrid work, or may be remote within the United States with monthly travel to Boston.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years of professional software engineering experience across multiple companies or product domains.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, networking, and systems design.
  • Substantial experience architecting commercial software that runs on a client, endpoint, desktop application, embedded device, or similar distributed environment.
  • Experience shipping and operating production software used by external customers, including ownership of performance, reliability, and failure scenarios at scale.
  • Proven experience designing distributed systems involving synchronization, consistency, event delivery, retries, fault tolerance, or multi-device coordination.
  • A track record of driving at least one cross-team or organization-wide architectural decision with measurable impact.
  • Proficiency in at least one production programming language; no specific language is required.
  • Massachusetts residence for flexible hybrid work, or residence in the United States and availability for monthly travel to Boston.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, security, or systems.
  • Experience with native or cross-platform applications for Windows, macOS, Linux, embedded devices, or endpoint environments.
  • Experience with local storage, file systems, access controls, sockets, network protocols, or operating-system services.
  • Applied cryptography experience, including public-key and symmetric encryption, digital signatures, and key management.
  • Experience with secure identity and authentication systems such as PKI, WebAuthn, SSO, SAML, OIDC, SCIM, Active Directory, or role-based access control.
  • Experience with file synchronization, offline-first systems, replication, consistency models, conflict resolution, or multi-device state.
  • Experience with security, privacy, collaboration, or endpoint products, ideally in regulated environments.
  • External recognition such as publications, talks, open-source work, or standards-body contributions.
