Staff Electrical Engineer

Rune•Mountain View, CA

About The Position

The Staff Electrical Engineer, NPI, owns power electronics, distribution, and energy storage subsystems from concept through production release and field support across RELIC product configurations. The role develops the design packages, validation evidence, and engineering transfers required through each phase of product development, and establishes electrical design standards for the product line. It works closely with mechanical, manufacturing, reliability, quality, operations, and external manufacturing partners. Travel is up to 10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least 8 years designing electrical systems in energy storage, power conversion, grid-connected equipment, data-center power, or similarly demanding production hardware.
  • Demonstrated ownership of an electrical subsystem through a full development lifecycle, from requirements definition and concept through validation and production release.
  • Hands-on experience producing and releasing electrical design packages, including single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and panel layouts.
  • Direct experience with protection coordination and device selection, including short-circuit calculations, breaker and fuse sizing, and conductor and busbar ratings.
  • Working knowledge of battery energy storage design, including pack architecture, battery management, thermal-runaway safety, and parallel-string behavior.
  • Hands-on experience with harness and interconnect design, grounding and bonding schemes, and connector selection for outdoor environments.
  • Direct experience with electrical commissioning and energization on live equipment, including factory and site acceptance testing (FAT/SAT) and stored-energy safety practices.
  • Comfort working on the floor alongside assembly technicians and in the field alongside installation crews.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to maintain a technical position with senior design engineers and drive cross-functional decisions to closure.

Responsibilities

  • Drive power electronics, distribution, and energy storage subsystems from concept through production release and field support for each product configuration.
  • Define subsystem engineering requirements from the product requirements document, assess technology availability, and complete preliminary concept risk assessments.
  • Drive design for manufacturing, design for assembly, serviceability, reliability, and compliance efforts with internal stakeholders and external manufacturing partners.
  • Govern electrical change management from change request and impact assessment through approval, drawing and bill of materials revision, and production-line effectivity.
  • Plan and complete engineering transfer to manufacturing and operations, including drawings, specifications, process inputs, and open-issue handover.
  • Lead power electronics and distribution design from the host-plant DC tap through conversion, harnesses and interconnects, and the compute load.
  • Specify protection coordination and device selection, including short-circuit calculations, breaker and fuse sizing, and conductor and busbar ratings.
  • Lead energy storage subsystem design, including cell and pack specification, battery management, thermal-runaway safety, and N-1 fault tolerance across parallel BESS units.
  • Integrate inverter and power-conversion equipment across configurations, parameter sets, grid- and DC-side interfaces, and vendor technical acceptance.
  • Design electrical safety measures, including isolation and disconnect architecture, stored-energy hazard controls, touch-safe barriers, labeling, and working clearances.
  • Publish and maintain released electrical design packages, including schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring and interconnect diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and supporting calculations.
  • Own electrical design FMEA and hazard analysis from initial draft through risk-priority-number reduction, mitigation closure, and sign-off against the released design record.
  • Develop electrical reliability and compliance test plans with quality and reliability teams, covering accelerated-life, environmental, and margin-characterization testing.
  • Partner with the reliability function on test execution and failure analysis, providing hardware, test articles, and electrical interpretation.
  • Plan and execute electrical root-cause investigations for production and field failures, including fault isolation, measurement, corrective action, and design changes.
  • Design, build, and commission in-line and end-of-line electrical test equipment, including fixtures, load banks, instrumentation, safety interlocks, and operator interfaces.
  • Support prototype and validation builds on the floor; resolve electrical build issues involving termination access, routing, and build sequence; and incorporate findings into drawings and work instructions.
  • Author electrical work instructions, field termination procedures, and energizing checklists for assembly and field service teams.
