About The Position

Onto Innovation is a process-control company whose technologies span semiconductor metrology, defect inspection, factory analytics, and lithography. The Staff Development Engineer will own hardware integration and characterization of metrology subsystems, conduct system error-budget analyses, and ensure hardware design requirements are met. The role establishes subsystem specifications and defines processes for measuring key performance metrics. It involves individual technical contribution and significant collaboration with cross-functional teams within and outside Onto Innovation. The position requires full-time, on-site presence at the primary factory location, including work in semiconductor cleanroom facilities. Travel to vendor and customer sites in and outside the United States may be required, up to approximately 30%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in science or engineering.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in motion control, including servo tuning, stage control, and automation mapping.
  • Deep understanding of vibration analysis, modal analysis, and VC (Vibration Criteria) standards.
  • Experience with isolation systems for micron- and nanometer-level accuracy.
  • Familiarity with system architecture, design requirements, and technical specifications for high-performance systems.
  • Experience characterizing and using sensors such as accelerometers, thermocouples, strain gauges, cap gauges, encoders, torque sensors, and gyroscopes.
  • Experience with microcontrollers, Arduino, and Pi.
  • Proficiency using accelerometers and a spectrum analyzer to quantify and diagnose vibration.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to diagnose electromechanical system issues.
  • Experience designing mechanical systems for very clean environments; semiconductor, biotech, and food systems are applicable.
  • Skill using mathematical modeling software.
  • Ability to justify and quantify performance-based metrics behind design decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to create clear reports and documentation.
  • Highly collaborative, team-oriented personality and a strong desire to succeed.
  • Strong background in precision mechanics, mechatronics, and electromechanical system design.
  • Ability to lead a technical team of junior engineers.
  • Ability to work full time on-site at the primary factory location and in semiconductor cleanroom facilities.
  • Ability to travel to vendor and customer sites in and outside the United States, up to approximately 30%.
