Staff Designer
About The Position
Ritchie Bros. is building the world’s most trusted marketplace for buying and selling heavy equipment and trucks. As we unify multiple platforms into One Marketplace, we’re seeking a Senior Product Designer to help shape seamless buyer and seller experiences across web and mobile. You’ll lead high-impact product design from discovery through delivery, partner closely with Product and Engineering, contribute to our design system, and help advance how AI is used in design workflows. We’re looking for a designer with strong interaction and visual design skills, excellent product judgment, systems thinking, and confidence working independently. You should be comfortable designing complex flows, handling edge cases, presenting work clearly, participating in critique, and mentoring others when needed. Experience with mobile products, cross-functional collaboration, design systems, and hands-on AI tools is highly valued.
Requirements
- Interaction Design: You design complex flows with precision — edge cases, error states, and recovery paths are part of your process, not an afterthought.
- Visual Design & Craft: Your work earns trust. You understand how visual hierarchy, microcopy, and UI detail affect user confidence at moments that matter.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: You work fluidly with PMs, engineers, and stakeholders — shaping problems as much as solving them.
- AI Fluency: You're curious and hands-on about AI tooling — not just in theory, but as a real lever for doing better work faster.
- Presenting & Design Critique: You present with confidence, give feedback that sharpens thinking, and create space for other designers to grow.
- Systems Thinking: You see how your design decisions connect across the platform and contribute to shared patterns with care.
- 8+ years of product design experience with demonstrated senior-level ownership
- Portfolio showing end-to-end ownership across complex product surfaces — ideally in a marketplace, e-commerce, or transactional context
- Comfort working directly with PMs in a discovery-to-delivery model
- Experience contributing to a design system
- Experience with or strong interest in AI-assisted design workflows
- Some experience mentoring or giving structured feedback to other designers
- Proficiency in Figma; comfort with high-fidelity prototyping

Responsibilities
- Own design across buyer and seller surfaces, developing deep fluency in both journeys
- Lead design on our new mobile app experience and other high-priority platform initiatives
- Work directly with product managers from discovery through delivery on cross-cutting projects
- Contribute to the design system in partnership with our Design Systems Manager — particularly as new patterns emerge from your work
- Help push the team's AI maturity forward, bringing hands-on curiosity about how AI tooling can improve design workflows and output quality
- Model craft standards across the team and show up actively in critique culture
- Mentor other designers when the work calls for it, while owning a significant body of independent work yourself
