Staff Decision Scientist (Strategic Insights)

Life360
$148,000 - $218,500Remote

About The Position

Life360 is seeking a Staff Decision Scientist to join their Data & Analytics team. This role involves being a strategic partner to product, engineering, marketing, and finance teams, influencing product development, growth strategies, and investment decisions. The primary focus is on delivering insights that drive decisions, rather than just creating dashboards. The role also contributes to making the organization AI-native by shaping tools and workflows. This is not a production ML role, but rather one that utilizes statistical inference, clear thinking, and judgment to identify and answer critical questions. The Staff Decision Scientist will report to the Data & Analytics leadership team and collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and ML engineers. The position is remote-first, with salary ranges provided for US and Canadian candidates, and includes a comprehensive benefits package and equity. The company emphasizes an AI-native approach, encouraging the use of AI tools as development partners.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in an analytics, data science, or decision science role at a consumer tech company.
  • Advanced degree in a quantitative field (economics, statistics, quantitative social science, operations research) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with causal inference methods in applied settings (e.g., difference-in-differences, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, synthetic controls, propensity score matching).
  • Track record of influencing product or business strategy through data, with specific examples of cross-functional impact.
  • Experience with experimentation platforms (Statsig, Optimizely, or similar).
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python/R for statistical analysis.
  • Problem-solving mindset: Structure ambiguous problems precisely before reaching for a tool.
  • Ownership mentality: Take responsibility from framing the question through delivering the recommendation and tracking its impact.
  • AI-native working style: Use AI tooling (Claude Code or equivalent) as a genuine development partner.
  • Curiosity and initiative: Dig into data because you're genuinely curious about how things work.
  • Influence at scale: Shaped strategy at the business unit level by framing the right question and making the evidence impossible to ignore.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with subscription or freemium business models.
  • Familiarity with international / multi-market analytics.
  • Experience building dbt models or contributing to analytics engineering workflows.
  • Background in growth, retention, or lifecycle analytics.
  • Experience with LTV modeling, incrementality testing, or marketing mix modeling.

Responsibilities

  • Own the analytical narrative for your Operating Group (OG) and serve as a strategic thought partner to cross-functional teams (PMs, engineers, marketing, finance).
  • Set the agenda for the highest-leverage questions the OG should be asking by understanding roadmaps and users.
  • Present to leadership and working teams with clear narratives and a point of view to drive action on insights.
  • Establish causality using A/B testing, analytics, and causal inference methods.
  • Work with engineering to implement event instrumentation and with Product to translate insights into action.
  • Define and implement metric strategies that measure what matters, working backward from user experience.
  • Build explanations for analysis, grounding them in user motivations and context.
  • Shape the AI-native analytics stack by leading the evaluation and adoption of new tools, agent workflows, and practices.
  • Mentor senior Individual Contributors (ICs) on causal thinking, experimental rigor, and AI-leveraged workflows.
