About The Position

The Staff Counselor provides mental health, consultation, crisis intervention, training and outreach services at CAPS. This role involves direct mental health services, case management, consultation, training, and other duties to support the university's student population. Requirements

  • Master's degree in counseling, Psychology, or closely related field required.
  • Licensed social worker or licensed/license eligible as an LPC, or Clinical Psychologist in the State of Virginia.
  • At least 1 year of experience providing mental health counseling services to young adults (18-25 years old) required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity related to anti-racism, social justice, multicultural issues, and ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of the CAPS staff team.
  • Demonstrated multicultural competencies.
  • Ability to form effective working relationships with individuals across lines of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, and sexual orientation.
  • Professional knowledge of adult and college student mental health issues.
  • Professional knowledge of mental health assessment.
  • Professional knowledge of suicide assessment, crisis assessment, crisis management and referral.
  • Knowledge of multicultural issues.
  • Knowledge of college student development issues.
  • Ability to read & complete clinical notes and records in a timely fashion using the computerized Titanium record-keeping system.
  • Ability to learn & use the computerized Titanium scheduling system for scheduling appointments, meetings and other activities.
  • Ability to learn and use word-processing and spreadsheet software.

Nice To Haves

  • 1 or more years’ experience working in a college or university counseling center.
  • Interest & experience in brief therapy modalities.
  • Interest & experience in DBT, ACT, or similar treatment modalities.
  • Interest & experience working with underrepresented populations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group psychotherapy, including brief screening appointments for new clients.
  • Encourage clients to utilize appropriate on- or off-campus resources and follow up periodically.
  • Perform crisis intervention and crisis consultation for the campus.
  • Conduct mental health assessment and evaluation services.
  • Make reasonable adjustments to scheduled appointments to meet requests for services.
  • Follow CAPS policies and procedures and adhere to appropriate ethical and professional standards.
  • Keep accurate and timely records of appointments (e.g., intake notes, progress notes, termination summaries) using the online Titanium record-keeping software.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records.
  • Consult with other professionals as needed to coordinate treatment.
  • Participate in regular CAPS clinical supervision meetings.
  • Follow instructions of clinical supervisor.
  • Consult with parents and on- and off-campus professionals with appropriate authorization.
  • Inform supervisor as soon as possible of students who may be at serious risk.
  • Provide consultation, education, and outreach services to faculty, staff, students and parents on developmental, mental health, and harm-reduction/prevention issues.
  • Prepare and provide training seminars to university groups (e.g., residence life staff; academic advisors; first-year students).
  • Cooperate with accountability and data collection systems.
  • Participate in University-wide and Division of Student Development programs (when possible).
  • Develop and maintain a network of effective working relationships with faculty and staff from other offices and departments.
  • Accept delegated responsibilities for special projects or committee assignments, as requested by supervisor.
