About The Position

The Staff Civil Engineer will provide technical leadership to project teams working on the planning, evaluation, design, and implementation of civil engineering projects. This role involves leading the study and/or design phases of projects within the civil, environmental, construction, and industrial fields. The Staff Civil Engineer will regularly interact with employees outside their department, clients, and occasionally the public (agencies, government entities, etc.), and rarely participate in selling to clients. The individual in this role is expected to manage assigned co-ops/interns, serve as a professional example, represent the Company and department positively, and possess intermediate software knowledge of at least two engineering software packages. This role does not require a Professional Engineering license.

Requirements

  • Civil Engineering or related degree required.
  • Execute basic design projects from start to finish as the primary designer of the project.
  • Develop baseline knowledge of state and local regulations.
  • Basic understanding of civil engineering principles, practices, and tools.
  • Proficient in computer-assisted design (CAD) and other design, data recording, and analyzation software: AutoCAD, Civil3D, MicroStations, OpenRoads.
  • Must be able to do Municipal Plan Review.
  • Basic understanding of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of site and transportation infrastructure improvements.
  • Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be both creative and analytical.
  • Extremely detail-oriented and accurate.

Nice To Haves

  • Three to five (3 to 5) consecutive years of Transportation Engineering experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred, although not required.

Responsibilities

  • Focus on Roadway Design.
  • Consult with and provide guidance to project stakeholders and managerial staff regarding engineering requirements for construction of various designs and modifications.
  • Use design software and drawing tools to accurately render and communicate designs; plan and design other necessary improvements related to the assigned project type.
  • Set design specifications by computing appropriate engineering requirements (e.g., water flow rates, traffic demand, earth work balance).
  • Plan projects based on the analysis of relevant materials such as drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, survey reports, maps, and other geologic and topographical data.
  • Draft and present reports on project-related topics such as detention reports and engineering due diligence reports.
  • Perform calculations for materials, equipment, and labor needed to determine probable construction cost.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other engineers to ensure projects progress properly.
  • Collaborate with surveyors (or direct and participate in surveying) to establish installations or reference points, grades, elevations, and other factors affecting construction.
  • Monitor project progress and ensure design specifications and standards are met.
  • Teach and explain methodologies used by the Company to others.
  • Demonstrate an intermediate level of understanding of design tools and civil engineering practices.
  • Perform fundamental design of projects for sites, including detention design.
  • Participate in appropriate meetings, association memberships, and events to establish, develop, and grow networking contacts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
