About The Position

Community Legal Services (CLS) is a full-service civil legal aid law firm dedicated to promoting equal access to justice for vulnerable individuals in Central Florida. CLS is seeking a mission-driven Staff Attorney to expand its Medical Legal Partnerships, focusing on addressing civil legal barriers to housing, health, and well-being for low-income individuals, particularly in Marion County, Florida. This role involves providing legal services in accordance with program guidelines and advocating for clients' rights.

Requirements

  • Must be a member in good standing of The Florida Bar.
  • Must be bondable.
  • Minimum 2-4 years of experience in civil litigation or working with low-income and/or vulnerable clients on civil legal matters.
  • Experience working or volunteering in public benefits, social security, health or human services, or community/grant-funded programs is preferred.
  • Ability to advocate consistently and zealously for clients while managing a full caseload.
  • Excellent legal writing, advocacy, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Capacity to effectively and consistently engage and collaborate with a diverse constituency of community stakeholders and organizations.
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm about outreach and building a new program.
  • Must be computer literate using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Valid Florida automobile license, use of own auto, and proof of insurance.
  • Must be able to work both scheduled and flexible work hours, including some evenings/weekends, to perform duties and attend meetings at various locations throughout the CLS 12-county service area.

Responsibilities

  • Determining client eligibility for legal services.
  • Representing low-income and/or vulnerable clients in civil law matters affecting health, including public benefits, landlord/tenant disputes, disability-related issues, family law, debt collection, and access to educational services.
  • Providing high-quality legal services, including investigation, advice, negotiation, representation in courts and administrative bodies, and document preparation.
  • Researching and interpreting laws, rulings, and regulations.
  • Preparing and reviewing legal writings such as pleadings, orders, and discovery documents.
  • Identifying legal needs of clients and developing legal educational programs.
  • Cultivating and coordinating relationships with healthcare professionals and community-based organizations.
  • Training partner staff and volunteers, serving as a member of care teams, and working with students from various disciplines.
  • Assisting with grant reporting requirements, including running reports, reviewing for compliance, and drafting responses.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with bar associations, legislators, and other community organizations.
  • Recruiting and providing services for private attorney involvement in pro bono programs.
  • Assisting at the CLS Helpline with intakes and providing advice/brief services.
  • Other duties as assigned.
