About The Position

Neighborhood Legal Services (NLS) is a nonprofit law firm seeking an Employment Law staff attorney to join their team. This role involves assisting low-income clients with various employment-related legal issues, including unemployment compensation appeals, wage claims, workplace discrimination, other employee rights, clearing criminal records, and restoration of driving privileges. The position requires providing advice, counsel, and representation, including courtroom appearances and phone consultations. The work is described as demanding but performed in a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Admitted to practice in Pennsylvania or admitted in another jurisdiction and eligible for admission in Pennsylvania.
  • Strong computer knowledge and skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and client service skills.
  • Must have efficient transportation to locations other than the NLSA office as needed for work.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 2 years of experience preferred.
  • Employment Law experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with unemployment compensation appeals, wage claims, workplace discrimination, and other employee rights.
  • Assist clients with clearing criminal records and restoration of driving privileges.
  • Provide necessary advice, counsel, and representation to clients.
  • Conduct courtroom appearances, phone advice, and consultations.
  • Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals.
  • Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients.
  • Conduct factual investigation, analysis, and legal research.
  • Develop case theory and strategy for representation.
  • Keep clients informed about their options.
  • Prepare pleadings, including complaints, answers, memoranda of law, and briefs.
  • Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals.
  • Monitor client files and close files in a timely manner.
  • Enter time in a timely manner.
  • Maintain case files in accordance with NLSA standards.
  • Provide outreach to communities and participate in professional organizations.
  • Stay current on matters of the law.
